Our speakers …

Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas was first elected to the National Assembly in 1999, for the Meirionydd Nant Conwy constituency. Born in Carmarthen, Dafydd Elis-Thomas was brought up in Ceredigion and the Conwy Valley. He was first elected in 1974 as an MP (as the youngest MP in that Parliament), was later made a Life Peer in 1992 and also during his Parliamentary career was Plaid's leader. Aside from his work in politics, Dafydd Elis-Thomas has also served on the Welsh Language Board, the British Film Institute and the Arts Council of Wales, as well as working in the private sector as a director of an environmental surveying company.
Widely recognised as a champion of architecture, Dafydd Elis-Thomas is an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Architects in Wales, in recognition of his role in the commissioning of the Senedd in Cardiff Bay.

Michael Trainor was the curator of the Festival’s main exhibition Bathing Beauties which looks at the bizarre visual and social culture of the British seaside and how the beach hut came to be re-invented for the 21st century. Michael’s talk is aimed at anyone interested in popular culture or who just likes looking at interesting pictures of the coast (without Neil Oliver). There will be lots of images and he WARNS that the talk will include intimate pictures of beach huts.
Michael has spent the last 15 years making large scale art and events in public spaces including Liverpool Capital of Culture 2008 and the international art/architecture project ‘Bathing Beauties’ for Lincolnshire County Council. He is currently working on ‘The Universe: Explained’ a performance project exploring the origins of the universe through art, punk rock and D.I.Y with punk rock band The Membranes. (Random fact: in 1999 Michael sold everything he owned to a museum leaving himself with only a box of ashtrays).

Owen Hatherley“writer, topographer and  Marxist of some sort”,  lives in East London and is the author of Militant Modernism (Zero Books 2009); A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain (Zero Books 2010); Uncommon (Zero Books 2011) about the pop group Pulp; and A new kind of bleak (Verso 2012).
He has written for Building Design, New Statesman, New Humanist, The Guardian, Icon, Socialist Worker and Socialist Review. He sits on the editorial boards of Archinect and Historical Materialism.
Owen maintains several intriguingly-named blogs: ‘nastybrutalistandshort’; ‘Sit down man, you're a bloody tragedy’ (what James Maxton shouted at Ramsay Macdonald during his last speech in Parliament); ‘The Measures Taken’ (the English translation of Die Massnahme by Bertolt Brecht); and ‘Kino Fist’, for a film collective in Bethnal Green, London.

This new festival aims to stimulate discussion about architecture, providing an opportunity to demonstrate and discuss the wide range of economic, social and environmental benefits that well-designed buildings can bring to a community.

The Festival will provide a forum for architects, planners and other professsionals and the public to share views and knowledge about the built environment.  The programme will also include:
-          Talks and films ranging from a documentary of Charles Correa’s work in deprived areas of India, to the 2010 film ‘How much does your building weigh, Mr Foster?’
-          Discussions will have a strong local dimension and look at the impact that development has on local distinctiveness.
-          Design workshops available for local secondary school pupils.
-          Linking in with the exhibition  ‘Bathing Beauties’ in Gallery 1, activities for families will include workshops to build your own beach hut!

Ein siaradwyr …

Etholwyd yr Arglwydd Dafydd Elis-Thomas i Gynulliad Cymru ym 1999, yn cynrychioli etholaeth Meirionydd Nant Conwy. Wedi’i eni yng Nghaerfyrddin, magwyd Dafydd Elis-Thomas yng Ngheredigion a Dyffryn Conwy. Fe’i etholwyd yn Aelod Seneddol am y tro cyntaf ym 1974 (fel yr AS ieuengaf yn y Senedd honno), fe’i wnaethpwyd yn Arglwydd am Oes ym 1992 ac hefyd yn ystod ei yrfa Seneddol, ef oedd arweinydd Plaid Cymru. Heblaw am ei waith ym myd gwleidyddiaeth, bu Dafydd Elis-Thomas hefyd yn gwasanaethu ar Fwrdd yr Iaith Gymraeg, yr Institiwt Ffilm Prydeinig a Chyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, yn ogystal â gweithio yn y sector preifat fel cyfarwyddwr cwmni arolygu amgylcheddol.
Fe gydnabyddir Dafydd Elis-Thomas yn eang fel cefnogwr maes pensaerniaeth ac mae’n Aelod Anrhydeddus o Gymdeithas Frenhinol Penseiri Cymru mewn cydnabyddiaeth o’i rôl yng nghomisiynu’r Senedd ym Mae Caerdydd.

Michael Trainor oedd curadur prif arddangosfa’r Ŵyl, Bathing Beauties sy’n edrych ar ddiwylliant gweledol a chymdeithasol bisâr y trefi glan-y-môr Prydeinig a sut yr ail-ddyfeisiwyd y caban traeth ar gyfer yr unfed ganrif ar hugain. Anela anerchiad Michael at unrhyw un sydd â diddordeb mewn diwyliant poblogaidd neu sy’n mwynhau edrych ar luniau diddorol o’r arfordir (heb Neil Oliver). Cyflwynir llawer o ddelweddau ac mae’n RHYBUDDIO y bydd ei anerchiad yn cynnwys lluniau personol o gabanau traeth.
Bu Michael yn treulio’r 15 mlynedd diwethaf yn creu celf ar raddfa fawr a gweithgareddau mewn llefydd cyhoeddus gan gynnwys Prif-ddinas Diwylliant Lerpwl 2008 a’r prosiect celf/pensaerniaeth rhyngwladol ‘Bathing Beauties’ ar gyfer Cyngor Sir Swydd Lincoln. Ar hyn o bryd mae’n gweithio ar ‘The Universe: Explained’ sef prosiect perfformio sy’n archwilio dechreuad y bydysawd trwy gelf, roc pync a D.I.Y gyda’r band roc pync The Membranes. (Ffaith ddiddorol: ym 1999 bu Michael yn gwerthu ei holl eiddo i amgueddfa, gan adael iddo fo’i hun flwch o flychau llwch yn unig).

Mae Owen Hatherley, “awdur, topograffydd a Marcsydd o ryw fath”, yn byw yn nwyrain Llundain ac ef yw awdur ‘Militant Modernism’ (Llyfrau Zero 2009); ‘A Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain’ (Llyfrau Zero 2010); ‘Uncommon’ (Llyfrau Zero 2011) am y grŵp pop Pulp; ac ‘A new kind of bleak’ (Verso 2012).
Mae ef wedi ysgrifennu ar gyfer Building Design, New Statesman, New Humanist, Y Guardian, Icon, Socialist Worker a Socialist Review. Mae’n eistedd ar fyrddau Archinect ac Historical Materialism.
Mae Owen yn cynnal nifer o flogiau dan enwau diddorol megis ‘nastybrutalistandshort’; ‘Sit down man, you're a bloody tragedy’ (yr hyn a weiddodd James Maxton ar Ramsay Macdonald yn ystod ei anerchiad olaf yn y Senedd).  'The Measures Taken' (y cyfeithiad Saesneg o Die Massnahme gan Bertolt Brecht) a 'Kino Fist' ar gyfer cynulliad ffilm yn Bethnal Green, Llundain.

Anela’r ŵyl newydd hon at symbylu trafodaeth ynglyn â phenserniaeth, yn rhoi cyfle i arddangos a thrafod yr amrywiaeth eang o fanteision economaidd, cymdeithasol ac amgylcheddol a all ddod i gymuned yn sgil adeiladau sydd wed eu cynllunio’n dda.

Bydd yr Å´yl yn darparu fforwm ar gyfer penseiri, cynllunwyr a gweithwyr proffesiynol eraill a’r cyhoedd i rannu eu barn a’u gwybodaeth ynglyn ag adeiladau. Bydd y rhaglen hefyd yn cynnwys:
-          Sgyrsiau a ffilmiau yn amrywio o ffilm ddogfen am waith Charles Corre mewn ardaloedd difreintiedig India, i ffilm a wnaethpwyd yn 2010 ‘How much does your building weigh, Mr Foster?’
-          Bydd gan y trafodaethau ddimensiwn lleol cryf gan edrych ar yr effaith y mae datblygiad wedi cael ar arwahanrwydd lleol.
-          Cynhelir gweithdai dylunio ar gyfer disgyblion ysgolion uwchradd lleol
