Into the Woods: Etchings by George Raab
George Raab’s practice spans four decades and is grounded in
portraying the wooded world. His touring AGP survey show, Into the
Woods: Etchings by George Raab, features variations on this forest
theme, a theme that continues to be central to Raab’s practice. In as
much, his solo exhibit, while presenting a combination of contemporary
and traditional printmaking technologies, points to the significance of
forest imagery in our larger cultural imagination.
Raab’s imagery reveals expanses of treed space that can be
scrutinized from many perspectives – technically, spiritually,
politically, and aesthetically. On a formal level, the artist’s quiet
perspective on spectacular views uses a mix of design techniques as well
as the vanishing point, for their scenic impact. When most restrained,
Raab’s etchings border on abstraction, constituted by interaction
between colour and line, representation and non-representation, in
addition to authenticity and fiction; while on a more personal level,
his works can be reflected upon as metaphors for subjective experience.
This fusion of concerns is further explored in a multi-layered
conceptual curtain/maze installation and in two vitrines that display
excerpts sourced from the artist’s sketch books, journals,
photographs, technological apparatuses, as well as the forest floor’s
memento-mori.
George Raab’s work has been presented in numerous solo and group
shows throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, and the Far East.
His significant exhibitions have taken place at the Embassy of Canada
Gallery in Tokyo, Japan; the Pratt Graphics Center in New York, and the
International Graphic Arts Foundation in Washington, D.C. His work is
held in more than 100 public, private, and corporate collections. Among
Raab’s numerous awards is the Grand Prize for Prints from the
prestigious American Biennial of Graphic Art and most recently Best in
Show (2D) and Best in Medium from Art City Austin 2013. The AGP will be
hosting an artist talk and catalogue launch with George Raab on
Thursday, August 15, 2013.

Into the Woods is an AGP touring exhibit. Following it’s Sept. 1
close in Peterborough, it continues to the Art Gallery of Kamloops,
followed by public galleries in Burnaby, B.C., Thunder Bay, Sault Ste.
Marie, and Northumberland in Ontario.

Meryl McMaster: In-Between Worlds

(Aboriginal and Euro), of being betwixt and between histories, in which
talisman and prop-like sculptures become extensions of the body. On
exhibition at the AGP to Sept. 1, 2013

In celebration of National Aboriginal Day, the AGP is delighted to be
displaying the work of local artist Jimson Bowler. Showcasing sculpture
and painting created using materials found in natural and industrial
worlds Bowler's solo exhibit is inspired by pictures and stories of the
