Duane Linklater Learning
organized by Althea Thauberger
20 June to 10 August 2013
Please join us for the opening on Thursday, 20 June from 7 to 9 p.m.
In Learning, Linklater’s first exhibition at the gallery, he presents a quadrumvirate of icons that recasts their individual meanings with a set of new, linked potentials. The two primary anchors are the Canadian Press photograph of Oka warrior Richard Nicholas standing on top of a flipped Sûreté du Québec vehicle during the Oka Crisis in 1990, and an image of Kurt Cobain playing guitar during Nirvana’s Unplugged session for MTV in 1993. Linklater pairs these images with two other elements that underpin their “geographical origins and familial relationships”: a print by the late Ojibwa artist Benjamin Chee Chee (from which Linklater’s exhibition takes its name), and a custom-made wall work based on the logo of Ontario Northland, the primary transportation carrier for Northern Ontario. None of these icons furnish a straightforward explanation of the relationships between them, yet each in turn extend Linklater’s ongoing investigations of ownership—from indigenous property rights to the artist’s appropriations of signifiers between popular and indigenous cultures.
