A Photographer’s Perfect Weekend in Los Angeles

EMERGING FOCUS [SUMMER SESSIONS] 2013
is almost here! What a better way for a photographer to enjoy a beautiful weekend in Los Angeles than with their camera in hand? Take a look at the following day plans for a flawless photographer’s weekend in L.A.

 

Saturday, July 27:
Schedule A: Downtown Explorer

 

8 a.m.
Grab a bite to eat at the famous Griddle Cafe. You’ll need some fuel for your first photo adventure of the day, and this legendary spot surely won’t leave you hungry. If you’re in the mood for something just a bit lighter, grab a coffee or snack at the tour’s delicious meet-up spot: Tiago Coffee.

10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Get to know the lay of the land with a fantastic photo tour. First up is “The Boulevard of Dreams: A Photo Tour of Hollywood Boulevard,” where you’ll join fine art photographer and journalist Susan Burnstine for a tour of a historically-celebrated street: Hollywood Blvd. As an artist regarded for turning her unconscious visions into imagery, Burnstine will guide participants to explore the use of metaphor, symbolism and personal stories to articulate, refine, or redirect their unique perspectives by way of a street that is rich with universal memories.

12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Take a breather and grab a mouth-watering Singaporean-inspired brunch at The Spice Table or at the more-Californian Mexicali Taco. For the more refined palate, take a stab at Baco Mercat before meeting up for the next tour on the agenda.

2 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Meet at the fountain in Grand Park downtown, and hit the town againon our tour “A Walk Down Broadway: A Photo Tour of Historic Downtown with Ted Meyer.” On this tour, you’ll explore the history of the ever-evolving downtown Los Angeles, stopping at Grand Central Market, the Bradbury Building, and ending at the beautiful blue art deco Eastern Columbia Building.

Schedule B: Westside Wanderer

 

11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Get an unparalleled walkthrough of the famous Bergamot Station on EFSS’s “Gallery Tour of Bergamont Station: A Docent Tour with Julie Novakoff Smith.” Julie will navigate you through local photography galleries, and lead you on an insightful and entertaining journey through the fine art photography scene in Culver City and Bergamont Station. 1 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Stick around the West side and dine at one of the various lunch and dinner spots in the area. Favorites include El Cholo, Sugarfish, The Galley, or have some fun, tasty fare at the next tour’s meeting spot: Michael’s.

6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Explore the beautiful coastal Santa Monica in an entirely new light. Join in on our photography tour “Historic Santa Monica: A Photo Tour with Helen K. Garber,” for a fun and informative photo tour through historic downtown Santa Monica, kicking off with a group drink at Michael’s. Joining Helen will be a historic preservation specialist from the Santa Monica Conservancy, who will provide a detailed history of the city that will inspire your images far beyond the click of your shutter! After the tour, be sure to stick around with your new photography companions for a fun group meal.

Treat yourself to a whole day of photography at the beautiful Aesthesia Studios in our full-day seminar, “The Print Matters: The World of Inkjet Paper with Eric Joseph from Freestyle Photographic Supplies.” Head out into the Culver City scene on your lunch break, and enjoy one of the various restaurants that have been cropping up all over town.
