In this dynamic, hands-on chekere workshop for all ages and experience levels, students will learn everything they need to play the beaded gourd instrument including hand and body technique, basic notes, and rolls. Led by Oakland-based percussionist Robert "Bobby" Wallace, the workshop will cover exciting and fundamental rhythms from Cuba, Africa and Brazil. Everyone is welcome to attend, including first timers. Robert will layer more advanced rhythms over the basics, so everyone will have a chance to grow! Students are invited to bring their own chekeres or use the instruments provided. The chekeres are also for sale.
Robert "Bobby" Wallace has performed and recorded with world music superstars David Rudder (Trinidad), Jovinos Santos Neto, Airto Moreira, Margareth Menezes (Brazil), and Bobi Céspedes (Cuba). Robert loves teaching and uses movement, warmth and humor to help students master the fundamentals of the chekere.
