  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Shelley Heffler - The earth. Cities, geography, topography, streets, aerial photography. Maps of the Imagination deconstruct and draft the world we live in, layer by layer. Born and raised in the Bronx, Shelley Heffler studied with the Art Students League, received a design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and a Masters Degree in art from CSUN, graduating with honors. Living in Spain, she explored Europe, and traveled by road from Turkey to Pakistan and India, documenting the journey with photographs. Shelley currently lives and teaches art in Los Angeles. ...

Susan Bell - It has been my wish to travel and paint the many people and cultures of the world. Raised on a farm in New York until the age of 11, I have seen many aspects of nature. I started out painting landscapes and still life. But my true passion, has been my fascination with people and the human face. I am struck by the innocence and candor of children. My willing subjects have been my grandchildren, much to their delight. There is something about seeing and recognizing your face in a painting. I am drawn to both realistic and abstract expression. It has been a goal in my work to incorporate the two. The many models I have painted have provided inspiration to look for the unique qualities that each of us possesses. It has been recent that I have taken interest in exploring the mystery in the face. Using a building of layers to lend depth and drama has been an exciting process. Committed to learning, my work reflects the wonder I experience daily. My hope is that my work reflects a deeper than skin look into the spirit of the people I do in portraiture. ...

Obert Fittje - In addition to the mythology of our culture, we all have certain experiences, expressions and images that have deep personal significance and meaning. These form the foundation of our personal mythology. Some of us have richer and more elaborate personal mythologies than others. Recently I came to the realization that I was mainly painting the images of my own personal mythology. I am self taught as a painter and after painting for eleven years, I consider that to my advantage as the icons of my mythology are rarely something out there in the material world. My paintings lie somewhere between the presence and the absence of an identifiable image. It would have been a waste of time for me to have spent years learning the techniques to make my paintings look realistic because the subjects of my mythology are mostly imaginary. I do not go outside to nature to find the subjects of my paintings, but rather I paint inside using my imagination and the images of my personal mythology. As a retired professional psychologist, I have been trained in the use of projective tests such as the Rorschach Inkblots where the observer is presented with purposely-vague images. The ...

Micheline Hadjis - www.michelinehadjis.com Painting has always been a passion. For the longest time I did not want to depart with my artwork.I love to paint everything that is exotic like orchids, tropical flowers, exotic fish...Through the years,I developped my own technique. Liking the fluid effects of watercolors but not the glass, I work on a fabric canvas on which I let liquid acrylic, watercolors and sometimes inks do their work for the background and inspiration for the structured elements in the foreground. The result is one of vibrant colors and stunning contrast. The final artwork does not require a glass.I have been working intensively to build my career for a number of years now. The road is long and arduous. You need a lot of confidence in your work, perseverance and patience to be successful in this business. Communications and exchanges with other artists helped me to situate myself and computer knowledge has brought me international exposure through my Canadian and American website. From these came international exhibitions, stimulating comments, participation to extraordinary events and sale of my paintings around the world. My marine scenes are the most popular. No surprise there as I am one ...

Cris Orfescu - NANOART I create Art from Science using Technology. My art is a reflection of the technological movement. I consider NanoArt to be a more appealing and effective way to communicate with the general public and to inform people about the new technologies of the 21st Century raising the public awareness of Nanotechnology and its impact on our lives. Nanotechnology deals with the synthesis, manipulation and characterization of matter at the sub-100 nanometers level. Nanotechnology is still an emerging area although commercial products are already on the market. I bring the small world in front of my audience by visualizing with a scanning electron microscope the nanolandscapes and the nanosculptures I create by physical and chemical processes. I paint and manipulate digitally the monochromatic electron images and print them on canvas or fine art paper with archival inks specially formulated to last for a long time (giclee prints). This way, the scientific images become artworks and could be showcased for a large audience to educate the public with creative images that are appealing and acceptable. ...

Ken Hillberry - In art and in life, dynamics of balance, integrity and tolerant interaction of all elements or participants ought to be see, experienced and maintained. At the same time, the challenge of affecting this balance is creatively encountering all changes and adapt accordingly. For some, the destination or pre-determined outcomes are sought more often than not. Then there are some who savor the journey, thus witnessing and enjoying developments along the way. I fall into the latter category. It's like watching the film develop in a darkroom. the image takes form a little at a time right before my eyes. The creative process, for me, is void of pressure and timeless. The ability and practice and discipline are central in my approach. My creative intent is to engage a viewer in thought and emotion, as well as, with their eyes. Using imagination, retrospect or model, my range of composition can be conceptual, perhaps impressionistic or abstract in application, but always developed to evoke an awareness and appreciation for the relative conditions in life experience and art form as I incisively or playfully interpret my experiences along the way. ...

Andre Pillay - Being fascinated by many forms of artistic expression , over time I have created works in various mediums. Ceramics , fused-glass and painting have their own qualities which I enjoy. Each of these mediums offer various challenges of manipulation and fabrication. Implementing certain ideas , thoughts and emotions in the beginning do not necessarily stay that way. I enjoy the surprises of creating work spontaneously sometimes. Inspiration is drawn from many sources including nature , architecture , metaphors , history, the abstract , places , symbolism , illusion and interpreted in my own way. Focusing more on creating abstract paintings, working with acrylics and mixed-media on canvas. I aim to capture the beauty, light and spirit of place. That'place' being metaphorical and imaginary. Digital art is also something new that I am experimenting. My hope is to portray work that is intriguing and timeless....

Richard Donagrandi - My works are abstract landscapes built around the idea that most folk aren't very aware of their surroundings or place in the world. I am inspired by the ancient Hindu practice of seeing without seeing; being without being; and the Buddhist practices of contemplation, cognition, and awareness. To express these ideas, I choose to paint landscapes blurred out to give only the impression of color and pattern. The color, pattern, and light become the details. Born from more of a complete non-objective style, I've begun to focus more on real landscape locations ranging from urban to rural from places I've lived or traveled. Blurring the image, to me, becomes a contemplation on the impermanence of the original image; embodying a buddhist meditation technique of imaging everyone you know and everywhere you've been, has passed away....

Sherry Harradence - Sherry M. Harradence Artist Statement: What inspires me is in the form of being challenged with Mixed Media Printmaking that uses a matrix such as plexi-glass plates, copper or blocks that produces one of a kind impressions that are most unique. Monoprint/Relief Printing has a history from as far back as the Masters, Rembrandt, Pablo Picasso, Albrecht Durer and many others. Multiple unique impressions printed from a single matrix are known as variable editions (original and ghost copies AKA). There are many techniques used in Monoprinting, including collagraph, collage, hand painted additions, and a form of tracing by which thick paint or ink are laid down on a monoprint press, registering the paper on the painted plate and passing through the press for the transferring of the paint or ink to the paper. Monoprints can also be made by altering the type, color, and viscosity of the ink or paint used to create different prints. Its a challenging medium and you are also painting in reverse. When I am pulling the first print/edition its like Christmas and cannot wait to see what is under the press blankets. My love for color is an obsession and expressed in ...

Xiaoyang Galas - There is so much darkness and sorrow in this world. I no longer want to paint the dark side... I would like my art to be a contribution to the beauty of this world... I want it to be heart warming for all people... I would like my art to be a message of peace....

Costanza Zappa - Costanza Zappa (www.costanza.net). ...
