Artists Describing Their Art:
Christine Lytwynczuk - Christine's paintings are about the human experience: relationships, emotions and introspection. She strives to evoke the feelings of empathy, hope, serenity and comfort through her work. Her paintings have a commanding presence, yet are quiet and exude a sense of intimacy. To be in a room with one of her paintings is like being in the presence of a close friend. Christine often paints children from different cultures, for children experience the same thoughts, fears, hopes and aspirations as adults, but they do not have emotional masks to hide behind. She paints from different cultures to highlight our inner similarities and because she is enthralled with the diverse ornamentation and design found throughout all lands. She feels that cultural decoration adds richness and beauty to life, especially when harmonized with the native landscape. Christine Lytwynczuk was born in Tucson, AZ in 1974. She spent most of her formative years, and as much time as possible now, in the Sonoran Desert. Her love of the desert and nature is revealed in many of her paintings. For twelve years she attended an open-classroom school where she had unlimited access to art materials. During high school she spent a summer in ...

Jan Harrison - A close connection with the animal nature has helped me to have more empathy with all manifestations of the life force, and to express the complex experience of what it is to be here as a flesh and blood being. As long as I can remember, I have loved animals and felt a kinship with them. I live with five cats, all rescued strays, and one feral. They are an inspiration to me, and I learn from them. Emotion has always played a part in my work, as well as the kind of mythology that comes from the body's sensual and spiritual desires, something felt in the bones and cells. I am concerned about the need for love in a world that does not respect vulnerability. I am also concerned about the need for self respect in a world that seems to disrespect the power of the life force. I am working for my character, and my work is concerned with the paradox of the power of nature with regard to our own sense of order or justice. Through communion with the animal nature, I am interested in the integration of instinct and intellect, knowledge and innocence, power and ...
Erica Emerson - I remember gazing over my uncle Melvie's shoulder as he doodled the most wonderful characters on the dinner napkin at the local L & K diner. I had to be five or six. I knew at that moment that Art was to be my passion. I spent my childhood summers painting what my eyes interpreted. Laying on the front stoop, surrounded in millions of colored wax, just trying to get that next door neighbor's roof just right. Sitting in church, with the members around me coming out of the sermon with a sense of peace, mine was different, I had a masterpiece in hand. I was amazed how I could see my own little picture in every corner of life. When I was in Junior High school, I remember going to see my Art teacher and asking her how to start thinking of scholarship for Art school. She looked at me and with wide eyes, " Well, I've never had a student so young be so interested in Art school!" -But then again, I wasn't just any Art student. In High School, freshman thru senior Art years were fantastic. I was taught by another inspirational teacher. She had...
Sue Jacobsen - My "artist's eye" seeks both the extraordinary and the ordinarily-overlooked moments in nature, and presents them in a way that allows the viewer to see what I've seen--and loved enough to want to share it. My regional landscapes, painted in oil, capture the rural flavor of the Wood River Valley in Idaho where I've lived and worked for over 30 years. Previously, California coastal areas were my genre. My love of the ocean and its awesome infinity is equaled in the grandeur and peace of the nearby mountains --again, infinite subjects for my paintings. Just as my professional training in graphic design at Art Center School in Los Angeles served me well when I turned my creative skills to easel painting, this then enabled me to move with ease and enthusiasm when sculpture'found me', and I learned to see with new eyes--in 3 dimensions now! My sculptures are figurative, of people or animals, and I seem to have special ability to capture the likeness and personality of my subjects. While I consider myself to be primarily self-taught, I continue to seek out other professional painters and sculptors whose work I admire, with...
Muriel Van Marion Kasmin - A life in Art Painting for me is an expression, not of reality, but of a personal experience. Everyone has a "child within" and by expressing these feelings I can communicate more easily through my art. I find detail unimportant and express myself with bold statements, use of primary colours and paint rhythms. My leading thought is that of growth, maturity and decay. It sometimes takes courage to let go of the usual techniques and open your eyes to see things differently. Over the years I have developed different styles and I do not feel bound by any rules. Painting for me creates happiness and I hope I can pass on these positive feelings to others. My paintings are just like my life; a continuous search for alignment and harmony between people and element, body and soul. My work reflect my inner feelings and is inspired by the abundant colours of other cultures, seen in my extensive travels. Constantly balancing figurative with abstract, I use the 4 elements of water, air, fire and earth in all my paintings. I began drawing at the age of five, and by twelve I was already under the spell of Vermeer, Van Gogh and ...
Andrea Mackey - I draw and paint because I must. I am passionate about drawing and painting. Being able to look at a subject and sketch it accurately, as I see it, is a major factor in building the structure for each of my paintings. Executing a well-planned drawing is what keeps me motivated. The media and subject matter may vary, but the structure beneath is what I consider my true medium....
Michael Garr - I have been drawing and painting since Junior High. I enjoy quick art, impressionistic yet realistic, and minimal. There are interesting subjects all around us. My inspirations are architecture, people, light and shadow, the sea and boats, imagination... and the old masters. Get out and enjoy your surroundings. All my works are available as signed and numbered prints. I also do commission works, some examples of which are in the portfolio. I donate all proceeds to charity (I have a day job). My opportunities for artistic expression have included drawing on napkins during airplane rides and waiting during my sons' music lessons. In 2012 I took up oil painting for the first time, and my mentor is Lorena Pugh of North Kingstown. I've done both Plein air and studio work in her presence, and am benefitting from the association. We have an informal group who meet and paint in Lorena's studio on Monday nights throughout the indoor season. I will continue to pursue art on a daily basis, and post the finished works here and on facebook for any and all to peruse. In 2003, I legally changed my name back to my original name, Michael Garr, so ...

David Larkins - I've always been intrigued by the luminosity and transparencies found in watercolor and acrylic mediums. I believe an artist must experience the painting - to absorb the surroundings, the atmosphere, to have a oneness with the subject matter before the first brush stroke is applied. My style is described as "Abstract Realism" and my strength is found in the composition. I'm drawn to diverse subject matter that challenges the viewer to see abstraction in the ordinary - to meld the "real" world with the "abstract". ...
Larry Whitler - I mostly do artwork because it's fun. I hope you weren't expecting to read some deep thoughts about art. Those thoughts are out there. I know, because I've taken some museum tours and heard all about them! But for me, it's just fun. Thank you for your visit!!!...
Paula Wilson - I will accept commissions from life or photographs for people, animal or building portraits. Artist's Biography Born and reared in Kansas City, Missouri, Paula Wilson graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting/printmaking. After working in a non-related career, Paula returned to art in the late 1990's, becoming a member of the MidAmerica Pastel Society in 2000. Since that time, Paula's work has been accepted into several juried group shows and has started winning awards. In Spring, 2004, completed a Master's Series Figure Drawing Class from the continuing education department of KCAI with Michael Walling. In Summer 2005, partipated in a weekend workshop with Kim Casebeer, and in Spring, 2007, a week long workshop with Albert Handell and Anita Louise West. Paula's two dimensional art works are primarily created with pastel or oils and feature landscape, figure and animal subject matter. Paula's work attempts to capture impressionistic and realistic techniques in harmonious balance, show the exuberance and beauty of life....
Roger Farr - Born in Much Wenlock Shropshire, England 1957.One of 14. My family life and upbringing was in the countryside. Always having a love for wildlife and animals, Archibald Thorburn,Fenwick Landsdowne,Raymond Harris Ching,David Shepherd,Rembrant and Mary Cassat were great influences in the early stages and latter stages of my work, this was complimented with having a grandfather who was an artist and a father who was a gamekeeper. Much of my work was self taught up to the age of 18, this was when my first sale of original paintings took place in Salt Spring Island, Canada.Bought by a collector of wildlife paintings who had noticed my work through a member of my family who lives there. In 1985 I started to work for Shropshire Trust For Nature Conservation, providing illustrations of wildlife subjects for schools and colleges. My work started to be recognised and other opportunities arose including other wildlife and community based projects. Whilst visiting Shropshire Conservation Group one day, David Attenborough commented that I should develop this skill further. So in 1993 after a four year course I obtained a BA(Hons) in Visual Communication, specialising in Illustration at Wolverhampton University. On graduating ...
