  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...

Toni Markette - Each moment we live is a gift and there are moments that I capture with my lens that I can savor and share - that's how I view my photography - whether it is strait shooting or images I dreamed up from reality into fantasy - it is a sharing of hearts and minds. Sometimes I translate what my heart sees through brushes onto canvas and then I share color - color that grabs you by the eyeballs and swings you around. I believe that being happy is a choice, I choose to be happy every day and it my inner happiness that I express on my canvases....

Jack Mccarthy - I am basically a story-teller who uses prints as my vocabulary. My approach to printmaking is eclectic. On one hand, I use traditional relief printing methods either a baren or a 1947 Vandercook Press, named Ursula. On the other hand, I experiment using brayers, stencils, natural and found objects, anything that has texture. My work is influenced by life experience and, most importantly, my constant amazement of what human beings believe in and how they choose to live their lives! Many of my prints are allegorical in nature and almost all are visual stories. I am presently working on a variety of projects: One is a series of relief prints based on medieval stories, both secular and religious. One edition is comprised of prints depicting religious beliefs and stories of 8th to 14th century Europe, what is normally but erroneously called "The Dark Ages" and/or the Gothic Period. The stories are delightful and, at times, gruesome. Many are Christian stories based on non-Christian (pagan) myths. The second project is a small edition of handmade books with original prints based on the Old Testament. The third is a book which will be a pictorial depiction of the life ...

Joakim Paz - JOAKIM PAZ - Born in Sto.Antao do Tojal - Loures - Portugal, completes the Course of Art & Design in 2005 and starts studying Architecture at the University of Manchester-U.K. Having participated in various exhibitions (individuals and collectives),and being represented in several particular collections, considering Art essentially an exercise of freedom and release, always prefer to face it as a space of discovery and surprise, so still looking in his diversified artistic trajectory to avoid predefined styles or schools. ******* OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS FROM CURATORS, GALLERIES, AGENTS,COMMISSIONISTS AND INDIVIDUAL ART-LOVERS INTERESTED TO ACQUIRE/PROMOTE NEW ART-WORK******* ...

Angel Rengell - Angel Rengell , Sculptor, Painter and Exceptional Drawer, studies and purifies the lines until reaching their clearest expression; his nudes are a declared exaltation of the physical wish. He creates great artworks; because eroticism is part of his complete philosophy, his drawings establish a conception of skillfully represented lines, using all the expressive possibilities. "The Seductive Influence of the Moon," is a staple for his pearly feminine nudes; in painting, drawing, or sculpture, like a keen sense of passionate strip towards beautiful women. He knows how to combine the classical perfection of the form with his studies of the natural. In every one of his works reigns an erotic perfume, thanks to those attractive forms full of expression, motion, intensity, and carnal reality. As for his masculine nudes, they show great character motion, expressive emotion, and they convince us of his profound knowledge of anatomy. As a painter, his creations are beautiful, with good understanding of the color, thanks to his experience in drawing, and the balance between the truth and the ideal. He cultivates the landscape and still-life with great beauty. His portraits are excecuted both in painting and in sculpture, maintianing the freshness of a Greek bronze sculpture; ...

Pygoya Rodney Chang-Phd - Rodney Chang, better known as the Internet's Pygoya, Webist, was the first digital artist to exhibit in Honolulu, back in 1985. He has exhibited around the world, including Paris, New York City, Chicago, Las Vegas, the U.S.S.R., England, Vienna, Budapest, Frankfurt, Australia, Seoul, Japan, China and India. His 1988 solo show at Shangahi Art Museum was China's historic first computer art exhibition. He organized India's first ever international digital art exhibition (1999). In the 1980s and 1990s he promoted his concept of Pixelism, or the conversion of pixels into paint, by hand and on canvas, to mirror (as art history) the digital quality of crude early low resolution monitor imaging. He also co-founded Webism, the art movement to create and exhibit art online for the sake of the global cyber-culture and audience. In the 1980's Dr. Rodney Chang gained national notoriety as NBC's Real People Show's "Disco Doc" - filmed dancing in his Honolulu dental clinic's discotheque reception area, complete with staff DJ. He danced on syndicated TV (NBC "Real People Show") around the world. The artist is also recognized in Who's Who in America and Ripley's ...

Bruce Naigles - From a philosophical standpoint, all that we perceive in the world of form is an outer expression of an inner dynamic. Though my work is predominantly figurative, I find it to be the art of giving form to the formless; ideas, emotions, relationships, events. These are by their very nature intangible and essentially abstract, though they continually alter and effect our physical reality. We read them through our intuitive understanding of body language, much as snow blown about on a winter's day reveals the invisible movement and form of the wind. To 'clothe' these subliminal qualities in human figures and bring them forth in a sculpture, whether it be a simple figure inspired by a model's beauty or an allegory of our human condition, is the basic goal and driving force in my work. ...

Bruce Naigles - Luc Bihan - Luc is an internationally known French sculptor, trained in San Francisco Art Institute. He has directed animation in both France and Canada and has supervised animation in China, North Korea, Poland, and Romania. As an artist, Luc feels art creation is a therapeutic meditative process, reflecting the subconscious and releasing inner thoughts and feelings. 30 years of clay sculpture Luc Bihan's interest is the relationship between the human and the organic world which makes clay his favorite medium for any sculpting project. The natural earthy essence of clay makes it the most ecological medium available and he believes "the language of time talks to me through my fingers tips." While self-expressive, his art is also a form of communication with his audience: the symbolic images he develops are frequently ambiguous and encourage the viewer to consider different layers of meaning. Whether it is his organic figurative sculpture or his whimsical drawings, the work of Luc Bihan is a statement of texture and sensuality. ...

Eduardo Diaz - Statement My name is Eduardo DIaz and Iim a Mexican artist residing in the Bay Area since 2001. In my work I express different elements of Mexican culture, while emphasizing its Native American heritage. I incorporate native themes and images, both extant and prehispanic, into my works and combine them with personal feelings, experiences or fears. Although cultural elements are the essence of my art, through them I also like to express political and social opinions. As a Mexican, I feel in touch with the problems at the Mexican-American border, as well as with the issues facing Mexican immigrants. I also like to express the tension between the indigenous and the industrialized worlds, and to analyze the different elements that make up Mexican identity, especially when confronted with life in a different country. My favorite medium is oil painting. I use vivid and deep colors, with which I reflect the light of the Mexican sun. Some of my compositions are figurative, and oscillate between realistic scenes and more elaborated images, with affinity to surrealism. My most recent productions are less figurative and combine the same vivid colors into expressive abstract constructions. Biography My name is Eduardo D...

Mikhail Onanov - I was born in City of Baku, Azerbaijan (one of the republics of the former USSR). I graduated from the Architectural College in Azerbaijan at the top of my class. Then I worked for the City of Baku as an assistant of the executive architect. In 1990 I came to the USA. I started to paint back in school. I'm painting for over 30 years now. My father was a well known artist in Azerbaijan, so I guess the love of art is just runs in the blood. I love painting. My favorite media is oil on canvas. Whenever I can I paint oil paintings. Right now I live in Chicago, and I enjoy this city so much that I dedicated many painting series to it. One of my first ones here in USA is "Streets of Chicago". There are only 3 paintings left in the series they were hanged in my house for a while. Feel free to look at them. No one had seen them for over 10 years. The style that I enjoy a lot is impressionism....

Teri Rice - Director...Cinematographer... Photographer Teri, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award nominee, works in New York City. She has been involved in film, video and television since 1979. Her critically acclaimed avant garde videos, have shown at festivals around the world. She has 32 video and film credits as producer and director, which have screened at over 60 venues globally. Her controversial and cutting edge subjects have segued gracefully into the mainstream arena, stimulating and inciting viewers. Teri Rice's award winning work "The Kindling Point", was nominated a Top 10 Film of the Year, by "The Village Voice NYC", and has screened at Whitney Museum of American Art, and over 25 venues. Her 8mm film "Meddle" Screened at Museum Of Modern Art's Biennial 8mm Retrospective. Teri's background in photography is apparent in her video's critical aesthetic. Lyrically constructed themes permeate this artist's domain. Raw, surreal, deconstructed, reconstructed imagery sweep the audience into a vortex of voyeurism. Teri's photography is currently under contract with Monsoon Images, NYC...

Jan Bollaert - In general, my goal is to combine the artistic craftsmanship of classical painting with the limitless possibilities of imagination in contemporary art. I strive to make a well-made aesthetic work of art by maintaining quality and using any technique that's available to me. If I have anything to convey at all in my work the very least I can do is to paint it well. With this being said, and since the majority of the art world wants to categorise every artist, Neo-popart is as close as I can come to defining my style. It is not a retro-style. I'm not endeavouring to revive the sixties or copy any of the great giants of popart. No, I want to make contemporary, post-conceptual art. There is enough pretentious, cerebral, coolly calculated, analytical and de-constructive art out there already. My intent is to bring back the emotions in art, even the most simple and sentimental ones. I don't shy away from incorporating kitschy elements in order to make a point - love the idea of "camp" even if it's "tongue in cheek" occasionally. I want to bring about emotions but not in an abstract ...

Luis Guillermo Ramírez Ezquerra - Luis RE. Artist statment. Versus: sobre Borderline borderline [boer-der-lain] s. Limite, orilla, frontera.- a. Incierto, dudoso. A borderline case, caso entre lo normal y lo subnormal. borderline (termino psicoanalitico): caso clinico de personalidad que oscila entre varias patologias, sin tendencia a alguna en particular.
