Artists Describing Their Art:

Marco Simola - I'm Italian, I was born in Florence and actually live in Lima, Peru .In April 2009, I publish my first photographic book, Metro. About the subway of the Italian city of Milan (

Shane Watt - Working with a range of media, including paint, pen and ink, as well as less traditional materials, Watt produces intricate and inventive maps through a process of creative cartography. Each piece incorporates both real and imagined locations and all are connected through a cryptic and conceptual metanarrative constructed by the artist. The maps represent a world at once familiar and fundamentally foreign. Their aesthetic does bare some resemblance to traditional map-making, but upon close inspection the usual indicators of place and perspective are often undermined, overturned or imaginatively redesigned. These cities and spaces are mapped out according to the intricacies and interactions of people, politics and ideas, rather than standard statistics or coordinates. Encompassing political and personal statements on a wide range of topics (including women's rights, environmental uncertainty, love and addiction), Watt's artistic practice facilitates a form contemporary commentary displayed in the coded details and design of each map....

S Tofu - My artwork has two main focuses; mixed media collage and landscape painting. I have always used old maps in my collages and incorporated map inspired ideas into my art. In January of 2001, I experimented with a collage using only maps. The success of the experiment and the resulting piece changed the direction of my work. Much of the map work takes its inspiration from other traditional art forms using repetitive patterns, in particular quilts and other textiles. In 2009 the patterns used in my collage work started to take on a more painterly appearance. In 2011 I spent the entire year creating a large-scale piece called the 2011 Project. Essentially I created a map of the year by making a piece of art on each and every day of 2011. The work is made up of 365 individual, mixed media pieces, each 4"x4" (10x10 cm) in size. In many ways the 2011 Project was also my sketchbook for future work. I experimented with new materials and subject matter for many of the 365 pieces. Those ideas have been playing out since 2011. 2012 saw a solo show that was a travel-themed mixed media installation called Imagining ...

Vincenzo Montella - Vincenzo Montella was born in Benevento, Italy the 7/14/1952 and lives in Naples where works as psychiatrist. He is graduated in Medicine and Philosophy and specialist in psychiatry and family psychotherapy. He is artist, poet and photographer. He studied photography at the Toscana Photographic Workshops attending courses of William Allard, Michael Yamashita, Machiel Botman, Alex Webb, Jeff Jacobson, Arkady Llove, Sarah Moon, Carol Dragon. ...

Tupper Malone - I have come to painting by a circuitous route having worked for over 25 years as a sculptor. In 2000, I took up watercolor and collage as my creative outlets. In recent work, I am creating Journies. In the Terra Series I am using imaginary mapping and symbols to focus on exploration. I have done ten of the pieces to date and intend to continue adding definition to this work. In Sacred Words Imperfect, I am employing two primary techniques--air brush and watercolor pours. I use airbrush to create and array of angles criss-crossing the jumble of letters creating words and mystery. In Technicolor Cows and the Opus Series, I use a "watercolor pour"-- permitting a spontaneous reaction to the color as it is set down on paper. Using watercolor crayons along with negative painting draws the subject off of the paper as I work on the painting. Using the watercolor crayons on top of a pour, the colors layer on top of one another in an ever changing the dimension. The layering of the crayon, pour and negative painting adds a depth to the visual work that creates excitement. I enjoy working in these styles and feel ...

Jordan Swain - "Color is like air, water, and chocolate, we need it to live! When I paint, color and the effects of light are what I think about most. My artwork rises out of my lifelong fascination with the visual, I have been an artist ever since I can remember. I've been painting landscapes because they are endless in their variation, yet familiar. People, and the moods they create, inspire my paintings, even if you don't see any people in the actual painting. Most of my paintings are the environments that we as people live in, dream of, and alter. I find that my paintings carry familiar colors, red being prevalent. I like red because it is strong, warm, and deep, and immediately evokes emotion. I work quickly to add energy to my art, and alternate between slow drying oils and fast drying acrylics." - Jordan Swain ...

Maria Teresa Fernandes - Admiring Teresa's paintings we are touched by her pictorial sensitivity. Difficult task in light colors (volume and transparencies on a clear basis). Few do it due to the required dedication with pallete knife(no brush). It's painting consacrated by the love to paint. Radha Abramo(Renowned art critique)comments at Solo Exhibition Catalog at SESC Paulista in June 84 -( sent at request and reproduced in one of the pages of this site). ...
