  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Stephen Fessler - Artist's Statement: Visionism All my images are born accidentally. I tack my studio dropcloths onto the wall once they've become sufficiently splattered with paint, and search the surface for suggestions. I'll discover an image within a tangle of marks, and paint to free it, an archaeologist unearthing an artifact. This process leads to related discoveries, and the more I find, the better I understand the space they inhabit, and a painting is underway. In this way does the painting gradually reveal its content and mood. Everything I like of the art I've seen, Eastern and Western, ancient and modern, sacred and profane, ends up in my work. It must be that, as I gaze at my randomly stained surfaces, these remembered images give clues as to what to look for. The larger canvases are free-hanging, fitted with grommets and intended to be tacked directly to the wall like a tapestry or banner. Smaller works on canvas are mounted and stretched so as to preserve their irregular edges. Stephen Fessler Artists' Statement: Directed Perception My mode of seeing changes when something has caught my attention. My "directed perception" chooses what I will see while obscuring everything...

David Evans Bailey - For a long time I wanted to take my photography to a new level of creation. A new reality beyond the vision and reality of the photograph. A world in which the viewer can participate and find something for themselves. The images I like best are those which interpose ordinary and make them extraordinary. The things which make the viewer ask why? and thus participate in the formation of the artwork. No art is really finished until it has communicated with the person who views it. Until then it is just a potentiality. This creative journey for me has just begun after a lifetime of real photography. The digital medium has given me the freedom of an artist to experiment and make my own statement upon my images of the world around me. I hope that you, the viewer, will enjoy viewing these as much as I enjoyed the creation of the illusion for you to view....

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...

Carla Goldberg - Carla Goldberg-Artists Statement: Bodice Of The Goddess-The Secret Life Of The Hudson I have been working on this series of mixed media paintings since January of 2009. In "Bodice Of The Goddess- the Secret Life of the Hudson River", I give liberal license to the stories behind the histories, myths and legends of the Hudson River exploring the playful and vengeful sides of the River Goddesses of the Hudson. It is the interaction of Goddess affections and jealousies, in play with Earth, water and the human world that puts the viewer as witness to the wave action and radical weather phenomena unveiling before their eyes. The way I interpret it, River Goddess lore has us believe that it is Diva like temperamental female whims of self indulgence that create an emotional response that is reflected back into the river creating the constantly changing waves and sudden and glorious storms that brew over the Hudson. What we as humans perceive is not the true intentions of the Goddesses, for Goddesses do as they please and play with all the elements as mere toys. Even Kipsy, the Hudson River's own mythical version of the Loch Ness monster is a ...

Catherine Crowe - When I first saw enamelwork that was done over 1000 years ago, my two passions of history and art came together. I work with a grammar of ornament that comes from the past, especially the'barbarian' cultures of ancient Europe, but my goal is to speak to the present. I do extensive research in archaeology, anthropology and philosophy which inspires and informs my work. I am constantly renewed by the daily experience, in front of the kiln, of transformation by fire. ...

Paul Orzech - Paul Orzech Sculpture Studio Artist Statement: The heart of my artwork is expressed by the words "Classical form with a modern edge." As an artist, I feel the need to incorporate the classic concepts of the human figure from the Ancient Greek and Italian Renaissance periods, with the more message-oriented elements of today's art. My belief in the beauty and power of the raw human form is exquisitely celebrated in the classical forms of sculpture. The modern themes I treat in my art include feminism; contemporary ideas of spirituality and love; and the all consuming presence time plays in our fast-paced American lives. I feel there is a quiet strength in the combination of established classics and contemporary expression that demonstrates a smooth continuity of social history. ...
