Reuben Njaa: 'Tauromaquia 1', 2006 Other Photography, People. A person would have to be insane to fight a 1,200- pound beast. • Artists Describing Their Art:

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...

Edmond Gjikopulli - Artistic statement Like a film fragment standing daily before our eyes, a film where we feel being at the same time viewers and actors, Albania of the years 2000 is obsessed by a consumerist fever, from the beginning of another system of references, which nevertheless, unable to substitute entirely the old one and matching everyday with him, is aiming to reach a much dreamed Eldorado. We experience around us a strong loging for consume, a loging which gradually is transforming our psyche and our system of values, but that nevertheless hasn't been able to reach the essence of what is original, "exotic", interesting and sincere. These are moments that I see everyday, people that I know, people living the everyday poetic and prosaic moments of existence, people anonymous and real in the capitalist Albania of the years 2000. We participate in this fairytale since fifteen years, with absurd scenes, tragicomic, kind and painful, grotesques and unique, which at the same time are the features of the new Albanian identity of these last years. Witnessing everyday this transformation is difficult not to be stimulated by these signals which are found everywhere, you can't keep yourself by turning the head ...

D Loren Champlin - D. Loren Champlin currently resides in the highlands of Maine with his loving spouse and son. Champlin showed an interest in drawing very early in life. Champlin has been painting professionally since 1992. Early works were predominately done in pastels. After about 1997, he now works predominately in oils, yet the youthful spirit of his work remains the same. Champlin boldly uses colour and line to express his artistic vision. The colour is weaved together to form a tapestry. Bold lines give a feeling of motion and energy. His works are influenced by the passion and energy of life. Painting is the symphysis between artist and subject - the subject and the artist transcends a part of themselves to the painting creating a perfect union. It is a butterfly and the flower, the butterfly paints the flower flowing on the wind to the next to create new life - the miracle of pollenation. Painting is a way of thought. There are no words really to describe the process as thoughts are emotions and hues and shapes. It is calculated chaos resulting in harmony. Painting is to capture the spirit as if one could take a breath of wind, hold it and give...

Reuben Njaa - All my work is dependent on form, color, and composition. I believe the most complex emotions can be evoked from the simplest of forms. My style explores the relationship between man-made structures and the digital world; the idea of recognizable shapes and structures living within irrational thoughts and emotions. I find beauty in things that are cast off. When I find a surface I am intrigued by I bring it back to my studio where I paint on it or scrape parts of the surface and then scan it into Photoshop and begin the transformation process. Occasional I paint directly on to the photograph before scanning using a combination of materials such as pencils, acrylic paint, Marshal Oils or watercolors anything to provide more texture to the surface. I work spontaneously and become more detailed as the composition starts to show itself. I think of my photo-paintings as two separate components, one part non-objective abstract art and one part traditional photography, brought together to fashion something new. As an artist, this combining of two different medias intrigues me. Texture is of primary importance in my pieces. I think of the surface of my photo-paintings as the ...

Ellen Rosenberg - aEURoeWhen you approach something to photograph, first be still with yourself until the object of your attention affirms your presence. Then donaEURtmt leave until you have captured its essence.aEUR Minor White Art is neither a profession nor a hobby. Art is a way of being. It is an expression of the human spirit and an integral part of all beings. My creative passion is expressed through the art of photography, allowing for a vocabulary of imagery that is my own. These photographs arise out of my own spirituality, a practice of mindfullness and being fully awake to the present moment. As my journey has taken me deeper into the study of Dharma I have recognized that the camera becomes an extension of my being. I bring the camera to my eyes and aEURoefeelaEUR the image that appears in front of me with a heightened awareness. An opening to the world precisely as it is, offering up all the richness and beauty that is present within this moment of time. I seek to create an intimacy with my photographs, allowing for the viewer to feel the art form, not as a two dimensional visual archive of a moment, but to...

Mark Struzynski - Mark Struzynski Certain Relationships develop in our minds, between quite dissimilar objects, ideas, smells, etc.. These relationships are abstract, often unconscious, and unclear. Mark Struzynski was born in Chicago, IL. in 1957. He became immersed in art while living in Copenhagen, being befriended by students, graduates and Professors at The Art Academy of Copenhagen. He attended lectures and read every art book in the Art Library, as his 'art education'. At the time, that he was living in, Copenhagen he was involved with the Photographic process, how photographs are thought of as being direct transfers of reality, but actually remove or miss a certain amount of detail and the effect of these 'mistakes'. These musings led him to working with Photo-emulsion canvass, developing photos of drawings, which were derived from both found and self-taken photographs onto the Photo-Canvass9see web-site www.markart.org for examples). Upon returning to his hometown Chicago, he returned to painting working with different layers both physically (textured paint and images on top of each other) and mentally, (the different layers of dreams). These paintings seem to develop into a series, which was named Untitled Box Series (see web-site www.markart.org). ...

Engelina Zandstra - In the labyrinth of my thoughts there are many roads that are leading to the unknown. many roads are leading to the unknown - around every corner a surprise - fata morganas unprecedented views - paintings designed according to laws of their own. ...

Hope Brooks - I am often asked the question what is my work about which is a little like being asked what is life about because in art as in life each person must bring their own experience and provide their own answers. Quite simply my work is about life and the enigma that surrounds existence. I make reference to specific experiences or draw on visual reality to act as a frame to the broader content and people bring their own interpretations as well. When I began painting in the 60's I was focused on talking about natural phenomena that I found around me in Jamaica, such as the sea, the mountains, or the moon but I was also trying to find a language that expressed the essence of that place I called home. In 1980 I travelled to Baltimore USA and my visual surroundings changed completely. This city had none of the natural landscape but it had beautiful stained glass windows and during my year at the Maryland Institute I produced a large body of work called "Windows". This included prints as well as paintings of the secular as well as the ecclesiastical windows. Someone looking at the work once said ...

Hope Brooks - Denise Dalzell - Painting. Illustration. Expressionism. Pop Art. Modern. Realism and, occasionally, a bit of Abstraction. My current work centers on my consideration of how we respond to each other, the stories that develop between us and around us, and how our collective stories reflect on and influence us individually. How our stories bounce off each other and combine to create new stories. My paintings are illustrations of the scenes that I encounter during my travels abroad and in daily life so, some scenes are more sweeping than others. How do we, as people of differing backgrounds, cultures, and experiences interact with each other Are we different people in a crowd than when alone How do we fit in or stand out where we find ourselves at any given moment, in any given story Stories are everywhere, and thereaEURtms no predicting what theyaEURtmll reveal. Body language, movement, color, contrast combine to illustrate my scenes of interaction between people and within environments. The excitement of being a part of something as unifying as a protest, the sense of adventure that comes from starting out with no particular destination, intimate moments with those we love and those we discover in the big events...
