Artists Describing Their Art:

Steve Doan - A Precarious Balance For The Abstract Painter "Doan's abstract paintings a precarious balance of abrupt explosions of uncontainable gestural energy and soothing, stabilizing structure, which seem to transcend the painterly marks that constitute it. The best abstract painting manages the doubleness with deceptive ease: this simultaneous sense of equilibrium and disequilibrium--not just 'dynamic equilibrium', as Kandinsky called it, but a double vision in which the picture seems a sum of disequilibrated parts that do not add up to a whole and an organically equilibrated whole that is more than the sum of any of its details. Indeed, it rises above then like a mirage of higher unity. Doan's recent abstractions achieve this complex magic. Whether mimetic of abstract, it is the undercurrent of abstract, seemingly arbitrary vividness-willing intensity--that is Doan's basic subject matter."

Michael Chomick - Being a figurative artist, my work over the past 20 years has encompassed a variety of mediums, i.e.: printmaking, mixed media sculptures, small upto mural-sized oil paintings, acrylic/bas-relief paintings, ink or graphite drawings, and constructions with various objects; all the while maintaining a strong focus on a singular theme - Exploration of the "Human Condition". The works dare to ask, in sometimes simple or complicated terms, the question of what this "Human Conditiion" is. And via the works already completed in various genres and media, the viewer is compelled to search within or externally for the answers of such queries. The genesis, or the root of the works, often stem from a point of inquiry that I wish to convey tangibly for the viewer so that they may, if driven to, pose a dialogue within themselves in the offshoot towards their own personal advancement. Being that life can gravitate in the direction of complicacy and varietal issues, so does the body of works that I have produced over the past 2 decades employing various mediums. The delving into the different media has not only kept it fresh for me as an artist, but also serves to point...

David Mihaly - The first series here represents notable historical and pop culture figures, many with Ohio roots, presented in a contemporary style. Each portrait can be seen as a celebration of the individual depicted as well as a meditation on the difference between the bygone era of actual achievement in the arts versus todays culture of instant celebrity. Also included here is a series of textured jazz musician portraits. Each musician painting was made using a layered acrylic technique, evoking the smoky atmosphere of the clubs where the music was born....

Jack Hill - All of my sculptural work is bronze, cast in the "lost wax" technique. Besides sculpting the original work, I am hands on with all the phases of the casting process, including the molds, waxes, metal, and application of the patinas. My foundry experience allows me to ensure the quality and integrity of each idea, from inspiration to final presentation. The ideas are born from observation of the human existence, in all its splendor and absurdity. The addition of my own whimsy and uncommon approach brings about an expression of life in the permanence of bronze. People are only one part of the whole planet and my anthropomorphic works are an exploration of the blending of man into various parts of the environment. With attention to anatomic detail and a tongue-in-cheek twist I wish to stimulate the imagination and, maybe, tickle the funny bone. Questions? Call me at 305/240-3238 A new line of work has been added that I call "Body Armor". The human form is treated as if skin was an armor that could be put on or removed as needed. If it had been lost long ago and recently rediscovered, what would it look like. ...

Nicole M. Mathieu - Difficult to talk about art as one should, first of all, feel it. What is more fantastic that listening to a piece of music, reading a novel or seeing an artwork which will transport you deeply inside. For me, Art is not a duplication of what one sees, it should transcend it. My portraits were done in this sense trying to transpose the invisible part of the model. In my recent oil paintings, I try to give sounds with colors which reflects life itself and will remind you of things that seem familiar. Last December 2011, I moved to a beautiful art studio in Paris (near Place d'Italie) and you are welcome to visit my atelier while on vacation. Please call me before at 00 33 (0)663528344 ...

Matei Enric - My art is a combination between easel and wall painting. More pieces which are assembled together, creating a full image, a piece of work. Space, as usual, circumscribes the work, the wall ( the vital space around the picture ) is inserted in the piece of work, becoming in this way an element ( having plastic valences) of the composition. The piece of work, in whose substance is also integrated the wall where it is placed, remindes of the wall painting , having a better comunication with the environment unbeing isolated from it by a frame or a closed shape ( square, rectangle etc). The base of my painting consists of the plastic rhythm ( the whole composition relying on the arrangement of similar elements) and the use of different ways of the elements materialization ( brush-up ) ....

Theodore Kennett Raj - About Theodore As a visual artist I follow my own muse. My visual narrative paintings and pen drawings reflect fanciful subjects and situations depicted with explosions of colour and textures. Born in Maduria India, I have a very exuberant colour sense which reflects the origins of my country of birth. In 1974 I studied design and art at Shillito design school in Sydney, NSW. I have spent most of my working life in the fashion industry . Previously I have exhibited my work at eca bar in Darlinghurst, Sydney, NSW which atrracted enthusiastic commentry from the fusion of creative locals of the area. In 2007 I was invited to join a group exhibition at Tap gallery in Sydney which was received with great enthusiasm. I relocated to to the northen rivers region of NSW. This move has given me a new freedom to to visualise and create new colours and shapes which excites me and gives me new sense of experimentation bringing new movement and life into my work. since march 2012 i have been exhibiting at the Channon gallery ,in the beautiful hamlet of channon N.S.W.Australia.the new body of works i have created useig acrylic and ...

Theodore Kennett Raj - Patrick Sean Kelley - Behind the Art There is nothing more intimidating than standing in front of a blank canvas and wondering what it will become. There is also nothing more exhilarating. As I begin to apply paint to canvas I find my work seems to be in continuous motion. Always changing. Always progressing. Much like the oil paints that actually embody my visions. I am influenced by many places, things, people and of course, many artists. My latest work is changing yet again. The palette has become softer more jewel toned and the subjects more somber. They speak to me as I paint each stroke awaiting life on the canvas. I am clearly influenced by some of the more modern masters like, Klimpt, Kandinsky, Mirot, Caldwell and as always, Picasso. The art is Inspired by the subject. By a woman's beauty as it is seen and felt both internally and externally. The images in my vision actually seem to mask their true identities as they glance out at the viewer exuding an air of aloofness and mystique. Each stroke is painstakingly smoothed and controlled to create subtle dimensions and color that create the mysterious creatures that appear to come to life on ...

Elena Mary Siff - In the collages and assemblages I interpret the mystery, the humor and the threat of my dreams. By collecting and juxaposing bits of disparate material, I create my own order. The souvenirs of my travels have been a constant source of inspiration. I am fascinated with very small imagery and a great variety of materials and textures. All of this work is a form of narration, as I consider myself primarily a storyteller. "Everything can be used, but of course one doesn't know it at the time. How does one know what a certain object will tell another/" Joseph Cornell That unpredictable dialogue is the basis of my method and my faith. Elena Mary Siff ...

Helene Mukhtar - My work reflects my preoccupations with current events: war, militarism, and people's struggles against impossible odds. My photographs are usually at the base of my creative process. These images are printed on paper and glued onto the canvas. Graffiti from New York, architecture from Germany or Pakistan, headless mannequins from the streets of Paris are collaged together. Out of this visual cacophony, I create a harmonious whole, an abstract urban landscape around which I develop my narrative. It is like a puzzle. I use acrylic paint and sometimes magic markers. I proceed through trial and error and constantly build and destroy. In recent years, graffiti have become a major source of inspiration. The use of drawings and cartoon-like characters as well as bright, energetic colors enables me to inject humor and visual appeal into serious discussions about war and violence. ...
