  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Kenneth Coleman - I don't have much of an artist's statement. Mostly I construct, or try to construct pictures. I react to, and interact with, various materials, colors, images, textures, marks. Everything I see, smell, taste and touch informs everything that comes after. Inspiration is trumped by work over time and lots of trial-and-error. Although I have chosen a very specific and limited theme, there is no political or social statement intended. I try to make the pictures interesting or entertaining ("entertaining" is that artistic blasphemy?) for myself and maybe for a few others. Occasionally I succeed, often I fail. I keep at it. ...

Basant Soni - ECO-FRIENDLY ART Creative use of my creators resources - My Organic Art does not impact the environment or waste paper and therefore trees. I feel that I am earnestly using waste of organic materials which could have been perished with course of time. But it is one of the God's natural gifts in their rarest forms to create a new and use my imagination and intuition. Waste not - want not - many papers saved can equal many trees. I do not want to waste my natural resources in any way. ...

Mary Zeman - in 1997, I began to paint after I had brain surgery to remove a benign brain tumor from the right side of my brain. I was recovering from surgery, and out of the blue, I called my mom and asked her to take me to buy some paint and brushes. This was the first time I ever painted in my life. While I was growing up, I was never exposed to art and just didnt know anything about it, though I had always wanted to learn more. I began painting on wood, paper, newspaper, anything I could find, then I started to paint on canvas. When I went back to my job in television, people looked at my art on the walls of my cubicle, and some people encouraged me to go further with it. I would work all day, then come home and paint at night, and looked forward to the time I would be painting. In October of 2000, I decided to leave my job and make a go of being a full-time artist. Everyday, I learn something new about art, and I love making art. The biggest compliment I can get is when adults look at ...

Elena Mary Siff - In the collages and assemblages I interpret the mystery, the humor and the threat of my dreams. By collecting and juxaposing bits of disparate material, I create my own order. The souvenirs of my travels have been a constant source of inspiration. I am fascinated with very small imagery and a great variety of materials and textures. All of this work is a form of narration, as I consider myself primarily a storyteller. "Everything can be used, but of course one doesn't know it at the time. How does one know what a certain object will tell another/" Joseph Cornell That unpredictable dialogue is the basis of my method and my faith. Elena Mary Siff ...

Reiko Michisaki - Reiko Michisaki uses to collage to unravel a mystery. Using psychotherapy techniques, such as dream analysis, she communicates with alter egos that developed during her childhood. Employing images and symbols as a language, Reiko has cultivated a relationship with eight personalities. Developed over a 17-year period, she finds that the personalities readily appear when she does art. Each collage tells a piece of a story, like a chapter in a book, and the collective series of collages is a vibrant and provocative journal of healing. Dreams and trances provide the themes for her art, aEURoeWhere dreams reveal that which is suppressed, my collages are subliminal dreamsaEUR?. She finds using collage work well to depict the often jumbled world of dreams. The images are representational of emotions and beliefs, and often appear as recurrent symbols. A symbol such as the hand, for example, represents activity from the primary ego, water is emotions, and birds symbolize the multiple personalities. As metaphors, the symbols communicate messages from the psyche, the forces that influence thoughts and behavior. When Reiko creates a collage she tries to put herself in a trance-like state, not consciously selecting images but allowing the instinctual choices to emerge. ...

Susan Baquie - My art work varies in style as it is the result of experience and observation, as well as formal studies. From a type of surrealism to expressionism, sometimes more realistic and at others abstract in conception, many of my pictures reveal a psychological awareness, at times a depiction of trauma, and at others, the joys of colour, pattern, design and the flow of paint or ink across canvas or paper. Painting is like life itself, a constant mirroring of energy, a dynamic pouring of the soul onto two dimensions. It can be caring or selfish, it can be political, humanistic and even cruel. It is a way of life and as with poets and writers, often a happy work and often hard. It is wonderful to be able to show work on the Internet in this way. ...
