Artwork Description:   The motive of this work “Essence of the woman” is the news which during some years we have been hearing on the various outlets of mass media about women, abused or murdered by their husbands, partners, boyfriends, etc... With this work I want to represent how, although women have “apparently” managed to reach or conquer posts in the workplace which were previously refused to them, or to enter government or to have an independence and freedom that they didn’t enjoy before, however, the WOMAN deep down is still the prisoner of stereotypes, beliefs, lack of culture, mainly from a society in which men (despite being in XXI century) are still the majority in governments, or in jobs with responsibility in businesses or are preferred for the job even when a woman is better prepared. From there to confining them in scent bottles, which come to signify the dominance or repression or coercion that women are still suffering nowadays, although it is all in an underhand, subtle or dissimulated way, sometimes having a luxurious aspect and apparently almost invisible. That is why I have chosen scent bottles, whose interpretation may be a luxury but also a prison, hardly perceptible for being of glass. They are beautiful objects but that doesn’t stop them being small and... comfortable? prisons for women. In these scent bottles we can see women of diverse cultures and different epochs of history (some anonymous, others known) in the different -and almost all significant- stages in the life of a woman. This work is a homage to all women with an attempt to make us aware of our place on this planet and to remind everyone that we are the other half of the population.
