  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Roberta Ekman - Roberta Ekman was born in Smithers, BC, Canada. Her family lived in Terrace, BC, but, because at that time there was no hospital in Terrace, her mother had to travel by car on the old rickety roads to Smithers, which had a hospital. She is the second youngest of a family of sixteen children from the same parents, Ted and Mary Johnston who were married in Terrace, BC. All the children were raised in Terrace. In the family there were two sets of twins of which she is one of the youngest set. She graduated from grade 12 at the Skeena High School. She has been drawing since she was very young and had no training, to speak of, in the field of art. She married Carl Ekman and raised five children. They now have seven grandchildren. Most of her life has been spent living in Terrace (except for the times spent in Alberta with her husband and another couple in a joint business venture). In between business ventures, she and her husband live in Terrace on their 35 acre property on the edge of the Kalum River canyon in a big log home which they built themselves with a ...

Sharon Austin - With the simplicity of pen and ink, I try to capture the essence of my subjects without the distractions of color. I also try to capture the Caribbean flavors of my birthplace in the faces and places I create on canvas....

Sharon Austin - Ron Zilinski - I have been drawing designs for thirty years. I first took an interest in spirograph but couldn't get used to the cog wheels. I doodled at first with 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper. Everyone wanted me to make them a design. I drew designs on a bigger scale and now draw on 22" by 28" poster paper. My drawings will take a minimum of 80 hours to complete. Some design drawings take me over 100 hours to complete. This type of artwork leaves no room for errors. Imagine drawing for 60 hours and make a mistake, it will show up in the drawing. There is no way to draw these designs fast and an incredible amount of determination is needed to complete a drawing. You must really enjoy it or it won't work out. Please look at my two NEW YORK MEMORIAL drawings on my website. They were drawn in memory of September 11/01. I use pens in my drawings. It is called Pen Art. I am currently looking for an agent who will handle my artwork, please contact artist. All my Originals are available for sale with the rights to them. The Originals can ...

James Parker - Painting, drawing, and to a lesser degree, photography, have been the driving creative force in my life for the past two years. The changing circumstances of life have allowed this to happen, and for this I am quite grateful. Pin and ink, liquid watercolors, acrylics, and the mixing of mediums are used for these works. My art is somewhere between reality and fantasy, with perhaps a unique style (as all are) which is slowly maturing. Much of my work I try to make light, colorful and fun, and even somewhat premitive with a touch of fantasy. Rustic little cabin scenes, and most seascapes perhaps show this best. Landscapes--mountains, trees, ocean and beach scenes, these are my favorite subjects. I prefer to work quite small. Most paintings and drawings come with wooden 11"X14" frames and hand selected colored mattes. These smaller sized works I have found to be excellent for creating pictures that are both colorful enough and detailed enough to carry an "impact". A few fine art's photographs taken back in the late eighties, some of which were published by a national calendar company in 1989 and 90 are also offered here. Those hundreds of hours looking ...

Dennis Howell - As you already know, my name is Dennis Howell. I have been drawing since elementary school. I continued up until I Graduated from High School. I left art alone pursuing various jobs. When I got tired of that I joined the U.S. Air Force. I served about 5 yrs. then I got out. The reason for the extra year was due to an extended long tour in Germany. For those landscape artists, you really need to go to Germany. I really enjoyed the traveling. What I love most about joining the Air Force and being overseas is that I found God. I was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Ghost at Bethel United Pentecostal Church in Sept./90. From then on I have been learning the ways of God. And one of those ways is using the talent that he has given me, both to glorify his name and support the needs of my family. Although I have very few religious peaces, I'm constantly asked by fellow church members for this. God is also dealing with me on this subject, so I tell those that are waiting, the art is on it...

John Hampshire - These works are a part of an ongoing body of work I started in 1995. It consists of drawings, which are labyrinths, and paintings derived from images as well as from life. The beginnings of these drawing processes do not deal directly with the image, but the breakup of the picture plane. I establish a series of gesture lines in pen; tentative glimpses translated with definite marks. This is the structure for subsequent marks. I do not allow myself (for the most part) to cross any lines or marks. In turn, initial lines act as "containers" for later lines. The result of this activity is a maze-like structure that also implies an image. I build up greater densities of marks to achieve darker values. The image I work from provides a guide to direct this activity. As the process continues the applied marks become smaller and smaller and the information brought into the drawing becomes more refined. This is a self refining process that I am continuing to push further and further with each piece. This is actually a process that started for me in high school; doodling in notebooks. Only now I have applied this mindless activity to ...

Stephanie Hayden - My work varies in style, i try to capture moments of my life on different canvases, from watercolours, acrylics, to montages, sculpture and my photography. Much of my work is dark & disturbing and i can attribute it to the fact that until recently i was registered blind, legally, having been born with dislocated lenses. The more vibrant & colourful works are from my later period after i had surgery to implant interocular lenses, thus i now see the world in a totally different way. This can be seen across my portfolio....
