Artwork Description:
This weaving was made as part of a collaborative installation I did with my artists' group, 9yds. The installation was site specific for the Wallace Library at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. I worked in collaboration with Michael Gardiner - a composer. He provided me with a set of "instructions" for the weaving that corresponded with a text piece he compiled for the installation. The "instructions" were based on permutations of the number 5, and I translated them into my loom setup and treadling sequence. The pattern throughout the weaving changes constantly. Since the installation dealt with aspects of the body as a repository for information, I added the soft sculptural element of a brain hanging from the translucent area of the weaving. This area uses plastic wrap as the weft, and covers a student walkway in the library.
