long-boat: in my contribution to the project [x?] artists one boat [a project that i organised in brunei bringing together 15 artists] I tried to synthesize three distinctive elements I identify primarily with borneo: the rain, the jungle and the rivers; and only secondarily the boat itself and its social and cultural significance within this ecosystem. Using basic elements to represent those primary factors - steel filaments, wooden planks and a curved white stroke - I believe the fundamental suggestion of the curvature of a boat has also been achieved. This in itself would have been enough to explain the inclusion of this particular piece but I still felt that something was lacking. The work felt incomplete and remained in limbo for some time while I struggled with the urge to place the knots I sometimes tie into my paintings. At first I did not know how to justify the inclusion of this fourth element but then it occurred to me that the speed of a boat is expressed in knots!
