This original, one of a kind work combines the genres of printmaking and painting. I employed an artist proof of the 2013 edition and added gouache and watercolour. I printed and published this etching at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please note that the work is shipped to the collector with both a frame and mat.
The work represents the FIRST STATION OF THE CROSS, which depicts Pilot washing his hands after condemning Jesus to death by crucifixion. The 14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS narrate the visual story of Christ’s Passion in 14 scenes They function as a meditation tool in Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches during Lent. The print size measures 15 inches high by 11 inches wide, or 38cm x 28cm. The frame is 12 by 16 inches.
This specific scene, which features an African child holding the water for Pilot, was taken from the sculptures in the Church at Rene le Chateau in Southern France. I pictured Christ as a ghost like figure who exists between the realms of both the living and the dead.
