On the surface, the work depicts the catastrophic economic condition of the Weimar republic post WW1. Money is so worthless that one must bring a wheelbarrow full of it in order to purchase a loaf of bread. Through the abstraction and mark-making, the theme of the piece broadens in its meaning. On the left, we have an unidentified figure of oppression wielding a rifle. The setting in which the figures interacting is devastated by war. The swirling, expanding, and contracting of the marks and brushstrokes allude to the chaotic hyperinflation that occurred at the very beginning of the universe. The piece is comprised of ink, charcoal, oil, and color pencil on paper.
