This is a piece from my series “Making Bach Visible.” I realize it is virtually impossible to “illustrate” a complex piece of music, which, by its nature is already abstract. My objective was to create an image that evoked one of the great Baroque master’s musical compositions. In the process, I hoped to enrich the viewers’ appreciation of the original work. My mixed media composition consists of appliquéd paper, acrylic paint and pastels applied to a base of eighth-inch hardboard in a matte-black frame. Unlike other works in the series, this one includes figurative silhouettes of Gothic sculptures. Although the composition is clearly contemporary, I chose a more traditional frame to reference the underlying concept. I would be happy to ship the work unframed to allow the collector to apply a different style.
