Jewish motifs in our painting.
Despite its ancient and eventful history, very few artists were nominated by the Jewish people from their midst. This is explained by religious prohibitions on painting , for it is said: Do not make yourself an idol and no image of what is in the sky above, and what is on the earth below, and what is in the water below the earth ... ..
And only with the advent of the Haskala progressive movement enlightenment in 1770 did progressive-minded people appear, among whom classics of Jewish literature Shalom Aleichem, I. L. Peretz and great artists of Jewish nationality grow up: Camille Pissarro, Chaim Soutine, Jacques Lifshits, Amadeo Modigliani, Marc Chagall. Of all of them, only Marc Chagall was engaged in Jewish subjects and considered himself a Jewish artist. Others were artists of Jewish nationality. This is well known to us from the former USSR, when many scientists, writers, artists, artists, having Jewish nationality, remained Russian in essence.
In general, there are very few Jewish artists in their work. The paintings that are brought to your attention are devoted to a time period from the history of the Jews, when a significant part of them lived in the Pale of Settlement - Jewish towns. The spiritual faces of our ancestors look at us. And it does not matter who they are: shoemakers, tailors, musicians, hairdressers or other Jewish persons in various genre scenes - they are all written out with love and ethnographic authenticity. We really hope that you will like them and will help to make your opinion about this side of our work.
