Artwork Description:

This unusual artwork combines the genres of printmaking and painting. I began with an etching that employed three individual plates placed on the printing press bed simultaneously to create one image. This etching was developed in several baths of Nirtic acid and incorporated the three etching techniques of intaglio, aquatint, and drypoint. The print was executed using with black etching ink on RivesBFK white paper. My inspiration for this etching was found in a published mystical work by the German scholar and Jesuit priest, Athanasius Kircher, S. J.1602-1680, entitled, OEDIPUS AEGYPTIACUS, now in the collections of The Cornell University Library. It features the Goddess Artemis, or the Egyptian Goddess Isis, with the Triple Crown of Creation, entitled in the book as Many breasted Isis. The individual zinc plates each measure four inches wide by three inches high, or 10.1cm x 7.62cm. I enhanced an artist proof of the edition with watercolors and gouache and then trimmed the proof to its edges. Next I mounted the painted etching on a piece of fawn-colored Stonehenge paper. This work ships to the buyer with a mat and frame. The watercolors I used were Windsor Newton, as well as the metallic gouache. Frame size-12 by 16 inches.
