Artwork Description:
This four-canvas work is a homage to RSDS, the neurological disorder called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome, which causes chronic pain. It uses the repeated geometric image of both the rectangle and the circle to represent the elemental string blocks. or building blocks, of human chemistry. I used modeling paste to texture the surface of these four heavy duty wood stretched canvases. It contains 24 karat gold leaf, silver leaf, copper leaf, acrylic paint, gesso, and pulverized mother of pearl and mica dust. There are natural objects sewn onto the canvases such as skulls, fish bones, rose-bush twigs, and the spine of a baby deer to evoke the horrifying images of the pain and horror caused by RSDS, a disease that I have. . . a disease of always experiencing pain. Each canvas measures 20 inches high by 16 inches high and are hung on the wall in a formation of two canvases over two. This work took over three years to complete.
