Artwork Description:
Commissioned by Karen and Robert Ginsberg, Santa Monica, CA. I based this mixed-media triptych on a series of photographs I took at Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 1996. Each panel is based directly on a photograph of the amazing landscape there. I wanted to push the feel of immense space and atmosphere inherent in the wildly colorful and dramatic landscape. I collaged and painted directly on vinyl shower curtain, embossed with a crackle pattern. This material enabled me to work up both the front and back of the panels, building up many layers and great illusion of depth and light. The colorful foreground of the mineral springs contains some elements in relief. The reflective/revealing surface of the springs was quite a challenge. I used many layers of acrylic glazes over collaged elements to achieve this effect. This triptych was over one year in the making.
