Artwork Description:
This is a fusion of symbolism into an almost abstract painting on a plastic box with hidden meanings behind it. At the first glance, one may imagine that it is like a typical scene beyond a window in Hong Kong: advertising signs, billboards and Chinese celebration placards on overcrowded buildings around. In fact, it is an illusion of a window scene which reflects the social issues in Hong Kong. The traditional Chinese placard is hoisted in the foreground to symbolize the celebration of the return of Hong Kong to China; while the advertising signs and billboards are placed at the background. The Chinese advertising signboards: Hong Kong Jockey Club, pawn shop, banks and credit cards are giving subtle hints of the social issue of the gambling problem in Hong Kong. As Deng Xiaoping had promised Hong Kong people could continue to enjoy horse racing and dancing after the return of the sovereignty to China. That is exactly like what Deng had promised all the social issues of Hong Kong still continue to compromise the demand for democracy in Hong Kong.
