Jerusalem in art. The most ancient image that has come down to us related to Jerusalem is the silver tetradrachma of the second year of the Bar Kochba rebellion 133 AD. The facade of the Temple, the Ark of the Covenant, the lulav and the etrog are schematically depicted on the coin. The sketchy four-column facade, which is represented on the Temple coin, is a stereotypical way of depicting the sanctuary for pagan Hellenistic-Roman art, but instead of the statue of the deity, the Ark of the Covenant is placed between the two middle columns. The inscription “Jerusalem” shows that the Temple appears here as a symbol of Jerusalem. In European painting of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and subsequent periods, the imaginary urban landscape of Jerusalem often serves as a backdrop in paintings on biblical subjects. Along with elements that are purely conventional or borrowed from the urban landscape of a European city, a number of masters for example, J. van Eyck, Piero della Francesca, Perugino, I. Bosch and others find details that are clearly borrowed from the outline of the city made by pilgrims. Jerusalem remains a favorite painting theme today many Israeli and foreign artists have been able to realistically or symbolically express the peculiar beauty and special color of the Holy City.
