Artists Describing Their Art:
Gary Drostle - My inspiration could be summed up by the many hand print impressions found in cave art around the world. This simple hand impression can be seen as lying at the core of my artistic vision, it's origin is perhaps human kinds most ancient creative expression and can be seen in cave paintings over 50,000 years old, the signature of the first mural artists. Of course it's not a print, rather the impression left after the hand has been removed and as such symbolises the marks left on the environment by people now departed. To me this is a profoundly democratic view of art for all, on the street, enhancing and changing our environment, interacting with people, landscape and architecture reflecting a sense of place through the expression of our history and humanity, it is this that inspires me. My practice concentrates on working in large scale painted murals, mosaics for floors and walls and mosaic sculptures. In developing this work I draw on the specific site, its history and stories, its architecture and landscape and its community and users to create works which are specific to each site, enduring and beautiful. Nora Cervino - Intuition, plays an important role in my creative process. My paintings, mosaics, drawings and photographs are direct representations of a journey that begins as a meditative process. Without a predetermined plan, the forms, colors, lines and themes in my imagery are developed. My work honours spontaneity and the essence of the magic I experience while I manipulate the materials I work with. The work is of a narrative nature, attempting to convey past and present personal experiences. Bold colors, lines, forms and themes are juxtaposed to create a melange of disparate elements harmoniously working together like life itself. By working in this intuitive manner, my work also attempts to provoke audiences to value and welcome the importance of subconscious thought and the relevance that it has on day to day living....
Dyanne Williams - Like many artists, I've experimented with many different mediums to find the one that best expresses my creative impulses. Creating mosaics is fulfilling because it is not just the act of designing, but the satisfaction of physically building a work of art. The infinite range of colors and textures of glass provide me with endless possibilities. My art is a reflection of myself: learning, growing, constantly evolving. My works attempt to display the beauty of nature in a different medium. My goal is to recreate the experience of discovering a natural wonder, the excitement you feel the moment that you crack open a geode and discover the beauty that lies within a simple rock. Just like in nature, my work is filled with philosophical contrasts: simpiicity amidst complication, harmony admist conflict, order amidst chaos. I feel I achieve this through intricate design with simplicity of pattern and repeating motifs. As sophisticated as art itself, glass is timeless, sturdy, and complex. Through it I can create original and vivid designs, bringing one of the oldest art forms into the modern age. Overall, my work combines organic shapes from nature with contemporary design....
