Artists Describing Their Art:

Dyanne Williams - Like many artists, I've experimented with many different mediums to find the one that best expresses my creative impulses. Creating mosaics is fulfilling because it is not just the act of designing, but the satisfaction of physically building a work of art. The infinite range of colors and textures of glass provide me with endless possibilities. My art is a reflection of myself: learning, growing, constantly evolving. My works attempt to display the beauty of nature in a different medium. My goal is to recreate the experience of discovering a natural wonder, the excitement you feel the moment that you crack open a geode and discover the beauty that lies within a simple rock. Just like in nature, my work is filled with philosophical contrasts: simpiicity amidst complication, harmony admist conflict, order amidst chaos. I feel I achieve this through intricate design with simplicity of pattern and repeating motifs. As sophisticated as art itself, glass is timeless, sturdy, and complex. Through it I can create original and vivid designs, bringing one of the oldest art forms into the modern age. Overall, my work combines organic shapes from nature with contemporary design....

Sudarshan Deshmukh - I create mosaic art panels and decorative pieces, sculptures, paintings, and drawings. My works range from the abstract to the designative, and my inspiration is derived from a wide range of sources, including internal issues and meditations, technology, and the natural environment. I include experiences from my past and my travels in the visual art I create today. When I work with wood, metal, stone, glass, or ceramic tiles, my goal is to transform these seemingly static substances into dynamic works that resonate with delicacy, softness and pliancy. My mission is to work with my materials in a way that will help viewers experience the mood, meaning and esthetics of my art without focussing initially on the actual materials. Although I am a self-taught artist, I have taken courses in Old Masters drawing and painting, and this training often surfaces in my work: I love the play of dark and light tones, and I enjoy pushing even the simplest materials to their limits. I thrive on the challenges involved in creating "paintings" from small pieces of glass or carving a "living" creature from a chunk of stone. I believe that we can all only achieve a genuine understanding of ...

Goksen Parlatan - As an artist, mosaic is a very practical way to express my thoughts, feelings and ideas even my hope. Working with the old techniques and giving innovation with creativity makes me happy in this area. Meanwhile mosaic always takes time and it gives me growth and strenght. Sometimes the work wears a different cloth than the first thought of it. So amazement and fun is always there. ...

Natalie Mcguire - Artists draw inspiration from all aspects of life. Whenever I am asked how I come up with my creations, I am reminded of the first piece I ever made. I was on a trip to Lake Superior's North Shore to go hunting for agates, see some friends, and take some photos of the landscape. Sitting on the rocky shore line, a horse fly decided to interrupt my agate picking and started biting at my ankles. After trying to ignore it for a few minutes, I was forced to walk into the cold water until it had completely covered my legs. The fly finally gave up and flew away, and I looked into the crystal-clear water and saw a great photo opportunity. I saw a great shot of a beam of light shining on the rocks and was hit with an idea. What if I combined this picture with some of the actual rocks Ever since then I've created various framed art pieces using materials that help bring life to my photographs, such as rocks, driftwood, flowers and finally stain glass. I'll never forget how spontaneous and lucky the moment with the fly was and with each ...

Sandra Bryant - For us, mosaic is a form of magic. The process of breaking down large sheets of glass, finding that perfect glass for each small piece, that just right hue, level of transparency and surface texture that will speak to what IaEURtmm trying to say with this glass aEURoebrush stroke.aEUR The medium is always a joy and a challenge, cutting the perfect shape and size tesserae to create that feeling. The overall theme of our artwork is a resolute celebration of this life of our world, both our own creations and of natural things. Mosaic carries a message of wonder, not only in the monuments and architecture of our surroundings, but also of the hope intrinsic in this celebration...

Mauricio Aybar - I am a self-taught artist based on life experiences and practical working. Shortly after beginning my studies in art, I became interested in mosaic and decided to go to several countries - looking to soak up different cultures and techniques including notably a significant period of time in Barcelona, home to Gaudi and other modern mosaic artists, where I acquired much of my technique and spirit as an artist. Art is believing and throwing you into the experience like a child playing. Even though I take my artistic work very seriously, I still have a lot of fun while IaEURtmm creating. For me, the mosaic is a way to create an engaging visual environment through the line, colour and form and also use it as an opportunity to develop my own unique artistic voice. It would not be unreasonable to suggest that any meaning or concept comes second, the quality of the actually work is what is paramount. My artworks are often about contact with architecture and basic living elements and directly responds to the surrounding environment and uses everyday experiences. ...
