  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Malcolm Tuffnell - Malcolm Tuffnell Is a tremendous talent in contemporary figurative painting. His works exist between a realistic drawn representation of the female figure and an abstract use of impasto and color. He has been exploring the possibilities of oil paint and pastel for over 30 years, with particular attention paid to how color layers interact with eachother; specifically how thin overglazes of a strong color, for example phthalo blue or rose red, can change the character of the paint or pastel underneath them in unexpected ways, producing many new colors while neutralizing others into grays. He has chosen the female form as the subject of his paintings for its beauty, sensuality and historical precedent. He uses the fluidity of oil to express the sensuality of nude skin. Many of his works derive inspiration from the frequent opera and ballet performances he attends, such as Madame Butterfly and The Nutcracker ballet. However, he does not intend to illustrate a story explicitly but instead to suggest a more vague emotional narrative. Education/Accomplishments From 1977-1979 Mr. Tuffnell attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and studied with noted teacher Gary Brown; when there he traveled to Europe, where he was inspired to ...

Claire Petit - In my work, beings of dream and intimacy migrate slowly to the merry-go-round of birth, death, and rebrith. Different periods and series rub shoulders in my decades of paintings. Duality breathes deeply, and from one life to the next, powerful feminine energy dominates moving, introspective, multiple, often wrapped in a gentle violence. Since 1989, I have been traveling and working between France and the United States. I had my first solo show in 1999 at the 24 Gallery in New York City. In 2004 my work was represented and exhibited at the Grant Gallery. In 2005 I left for Mexico, where I maintained a studio for three months in Oaxaca. From 2005 to 2010, my work was represented and exhibited by the Opera Gallery in New York City. During those years I regularly painted in New York. Since 2010 my work has been exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg Metz. My studio is in Nancy, where I live. Claire Petit - Boyko Asparuhov - An imaginative expressionist,Boyko,s oil paintings are a treat to the eye and the soul with their strong brilliant colors, fantasy characters and symbolic elements fused into a bold, graphic style."My work conveys the positive energy of the universe-love,romance,dreams,music,nature,beauty and freedom,"says Boyko. Born in Pleven,Bulgaria in1959,Boyko began painting at age six. After graduating from the Bulgarian Academy Of Fine Art,he muved to Prague in the Czech Republic where he operated his own gallery until 2005 year. Boyko lives and works in Chicago,United States...

Marilia Lutz - The act of creation is holy and profound in all its manifestations - not only the natural world surrounding us, but also the artistic manifestations representing life. Through my art, I try to represent and communicate visually what I believe illustrates the beauty of life and nature - from special moments or places, and from small things, whether symbolic or not. I find inspiration for my compositions in my surroundings, in moments that are for one reason or another important to me. I look deeply into my feelings to express what I believe is meaningful. Being an artist has been an exciting and overwhelming experience that enriches my life and gives me the opportunity to share with others some of my experiences, views and feelings. My preferred medium is oil on canvas; sometimes I explore other mediums such as pastel, charcoal, and graphite. I explore three basic themes in my compositions that I call: Trilogy; Insights in Forms and Shapes; and Visions of Places. "Trilogy" is a study where I represent what I believe to be the essence of life: the eternal and constant presence of three elements in many aspects of life and nature. "Insights in Forms and Shapes" it is...

John Tierney - The paintings I make are charts of wanderings; what I mean by that is: you can wander around a painting and have, at least sometimes, a feeling of recognition of the place where you are. But the place can shift into a new location, you lose your bearings and then find yourself by intuition. You don't know how you got there, but you know where you are. There are well-beaten tracks and waymarkings that appear familiar. When I set off on a new canvas, white, pristine, in the morning, I often think why should I want to mess this up? It's like an empty mirror, but when the first few marks are made, it changes. It has direction, it begins to beckon you. Making the decision to start is the important thing, it doesn't seem to matter what you do. Disparate things can be united, related somehow. Dialogue begins. You're conscious of what is going on in one direction, but a lot is happening along the wayside. Contrasts are important: for example, organic versus geometric. Organic forms arise from memory. There is the energy of the life form against the rectangle of geometric space. Color...
