  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Daniela Isache - Expressionism is my way to show the world as I see it. Since I was young, I looked at the world differently from my friends. I saw a strange world, wondering why the other people did not see it like me. The world I saw was unjust and made of unhappiness. Looking profoundly at the people's faces, I found them very expressive and I was stroked by their strange traits. I have never seen beautiful or ugly faces but only very expressive ones. Then, I began to paint these faces and I met my future love - Expressionism. At that time, I discovered and understood that the expressionist painting could express the life as I see it. I applied my Expressionism without making any concession to the beautiful or decorative painting. I applied it with force and sometimes with despair. However, when finishing a painting I felt released. I felt as if all my pain and troubles came out of my life. The dramatic motifs I found in everyday life created insurmountable interrogations and tensions. I became calm, but when I looked at my painting, I saw there fear, sorrow and I understood that my Expressionism saved me. Some people ...

Mike Wong Joon Fong - i?1/2In many of my works, paint is the art itself rather than the paint that created the art. Thus paint is used like an actor, a prop, and the canvas is used like a stage. Paint has a physical entity of its own. Paint has its own personality. I am here to facilitate and to engineer the process. Each piece of my work is a conversation of that process and each process is a conversation of my life experiences and each conversation is about life manifestation. I think and see life in recursive forms, paradoxical codes within the complex structures. My approach is to minimize them into the simplest possible minimum. It has to be fast, almost instantaneous so that the intention is captured in its possible true sense. Spontaneity is spiritual. It is mysterious, unpredictable and always explorative and experimental. Can spontaneous notion be engineered Spontaneity is almost exclusive to humans. I may be wrong but no all-knowing and higher beings can have this experience.i?1/2 ...

Reiner Makarowski - I don't like the usage of " uploading the importance and the meaning of artworks by words". I don't like it at all ... and I'm committed not to take place in this marketing game. The main influences of my work seem to be the so called classic modernism represented for example by works of Kandinsky, Klee, Braques a.o. Other influences come from many contemporary painters , for example guys who prefer the so called "lyrical expressionism". And of course I'm on the road to find and establish "my style". ...

Michael Anderson - I am an American artist now working in Seoul, S. Korea after living and exhibiting in Los Angeles for about 12 years. My work stems from my experience of NE Asian culture, while extending the tradition of Western abstraction. ItaEURtms a mixture of vernacular, pop culture and trends in abstraction such as biomorphism, minimalism, and hard edge, combined as a sort of aEURoepop minimalism.aEUR The artwork includes paintings, digital prints, work on paper, etc. ...

Chi Harkrader - Artist Statement A canvas, sculpture, or new media presents a stage for me to examine the visually driven attributes of light, perspective, color, form, and movement. Past experiences, present environment, imagination, and experimentation with mixed media allow me to echo my passions, peace, or pleasure. Expression from impressions encountered in urban, rural, or figurative life evolve. Form and color are fashioned from the physical, mental, or spiritual. Red and black may stir energy or passion. Ochre or sienna may prompt an affection of earth or rock. I draw, painting, sculpt or video with paint, found objects or software. Three-dimensional interior or exterior attachments are sometimes explored. My new work may shadow my previous series and motifs, as I strive for that elusive originality. My exploratory nature for diversity keeps me moving in and out of my compound-ongoing series (Action / Onyx / Lyric / Urban / Corolla). Sculpture and video now parallel my inventive journey. Randy Sprout - I grew up in a small town in Northern Iowa, played football, coached the swimming team, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in printmaking studying under Mauricio Lasansky. I then went into the Army and ended up pulling 13 months in Korea on the DMZ. Coming out of Korea I entered UCLA and earned a MA and MFA in printmaking while studying under Jan Stussy and Stanton Mac-Donald Wright. The next year after the funds dried up on my Fulbright Award to Portugal, because of the Angola War, I was lucky to get hired by USC where I taught printmaking as a junior faculty member. I also replaced professors at UCLA when they went on sabaticals, and taught one year at Pierce College. In 1977 I tried Real Estate, you know just for the summer, but by fall I had purchased Century 21 Hollywood Inc. and had a new vocation going. Now 31 years into real estate, I'm coming full circle and starting to paint little quick studies 9X12. I'm using just 1/2 inch brushes and 5 colors. I intentionally limit my time to 2 hours after which I stop and throw ...

Natasha Mylius - I am a painter currently living in Austin, Texas. I received a very traditional art education and originally mastered a realistic style of painting. Yet, as an independent artist, I began to explore different styles and techniques. Now I find that impressionism is the style closest to my heart. I work in oil on canvas by using a palette knife, building up the color in multiple layers. The variety of colors and the texture help me truly reflect the way I see the world. ...

Carlos Pardo - IN SHORT: INSPIRATION: Concious and unconcious perceptions, my background, all circunstances of my life, experiences, past and present, books and newspapers that I read, films, Internet aEUR|feelings, emotions and a fertile imagination sometimes, all them aid to weave a story that will change alongside the execution of a piece. In my opinion our tradition, for thousands of years, the Arts reflect the vision of a trascendent life beyond our tangible life. THEME: Unreal cityscapes let us a special kind of plasticity. The imagination and feelings are active agents that are modeling the perceptible reality. Transcendent and oniric themes entered and remain in my artwork. In my imaginary urban landscapes there are overlaid elements of towns he has visited, some imagined, and maybe dreamed, but all with a unique feminine soul. The Town is a mother, lover, or daughter of the actions, dreams and passions of those who dwell in them or recall them in the distance. It is an idea in which wander those who have been caught up in its infinite labyrinth. PROCESS: I usually have not idea about what I will show on the surface. There is a lack of a script or previous sketch. Forms are born...

Chris Gould - Never the studious young boy, I spent most of my class time drawing sketches in the pages of my notebooks. Santa Anna, raising his sword in the battle for the Alamo buried deep within my notebook jumped out and attacked my father one evening while he help me with my homework. He counter attacked by hurling, "you will never be anything doing stuff like this", and I believed him. In school I loved art class, excelled and looked forward to it but never believed that I could be something there. When I went to college I focused on art and graduated near the top of my class with a BFA, and still believed that I would never be anything. After all, all I needed was a degree. With diploma in hand I entered the professional world with the ambition to climb the corporate ladder. Climb and climb to be something. Reaching to be something, I fall on art as therapy for the stress and anxiety that being something brings. Now I am something and nothing at the same time because I don't believe any more. And now I want to be something else. It is here in this ambition ...

Yuming Zhu - I land my brush with the force of a giant rock splashing into the ocean. I am not looking for a beautiful painting, but to express Life itself. Painting is just like a stacking of passions. Painting is a method of striping myself naked and facing the truth of my inner emotion. I invite the viewer to experience through my paintings the joy of being alive right at this moment. I believe I can do lots of things, but painting and poetry are the best beloved channels to express my complicated emotions. Originally from Shanghai, Yuming began studying under the masters at a young age. After his BA from China, Yuming came to the States and graduated from Sonoma State University with his MA in 1991. Working in oils, pastels and ChineseSumi Watercolors, Yumings work is a unique blend of East meets West artistry. It is a style that Yuming refers to as Transism, in reference to the constantly evolving interests, which include observations on modern life, a love of music, and an exploration of his own unique heritage. I paint to achieve balance and harmony. Once I reach that, I will for sure break itaEUR aEURoeMy art is just...

James Hill - My work explores the use of color and rhythm to create moving images that seek to provoke a particular mood or emotion by invoking a memory or moment that is meaningful to the viewer. My latest works include a study of the massive power inside thunderstorms and lightning strikes including a 6x10 oil of a storm entitled Tempest. These new paintings reflect the change in the weather patterns throughout our world thanks to global warming, which no well-educated person can deny these days. My paintings are intended to glorify the Masters Works and The awe of Creation, the Universe, the Stars and Planets, and our own incredible Earthly Skies and Lands. My other works include Fantasy, Gothic, Steampunk and Science Fiction of Utopian design cities of the future that require no use of fossil fuels at all as I look to give humanity hope for a better future of free power and sustainable living on this planet as we look to preserve it and encourage the rebuilding of nature across the world as we are but shepherds of Gods creation. ...

Prabha Shah - There's a central theme underlining my work: India, or more specifically Rajasthan, in colours. Cities, streets, people, desert depictions fading rapidly, everything I love and miss. Emotional tension finds an outlet in the process of creation. People and historical events live inside me as shapes and colours. Colour is central to my painting. Life is the epitome of the universe. Through painting I try to stay close to those things I like but can't own. Things which often hurt us but we insist on desiring and loving in a unique way. The mysterious repetition of nothingness that torments us all. --Prabha Shah...

Durre Waseem - Durre Waseem of Corona, a native of Pakistan, has a Master of Fine Arts degree from Punjab University and taught for 10 years at various colleges in Pakistan. Durre moved to the United States in 2001 and became a full time painter. She paints portraits and plein air in oils, pastels, watercolor, ink, and acrylics and captures the local colour of both the people and the place of wherever she may be. Her bold, colorful brushwork and loose impressionistic style effectively capture the energy and feeling of her subject and establishes a direct line of communication with the viewer. Her inspiration is usually an ordinary object, how its identity is defined by its environment, and how it becomes apart of its surroundings. Durre has participated in many national and international exhibitions both in Pakistan and the U.S. ...
