This is one panel of a diptych, it and the following paintingfit together at the center, each 48W X 60H. The two paintings are identical--one is turned upside down. The source of the imagery is a tropical gourd plant momordica charantia commonly exterminated in Southwest Florida. I have been fascinated by this plant as it grows in my garden. At maturity the gourd releases poisonous, bright red seeds that drop from a flap in its horny hide. In this interpretation the flap is sharpened and elongated as the seeds spill out, spinning in the center toward release. Then the seeds go wild, changing shape, rolling around the outside of gourd shape, in joyful, dizzying abandon. Our eye moves from form to form in this high energy composition, which hums with movement and color. The imagery is likened to that of a circus--listen carefully, hear the sounds of the chords and joy of the Merry-Go-Round. The diptych can be displayed side by side or at a right angle See details .
