  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Carol Santora - I feel a special connection to animals, and as an artist, I express that special connection in paint. Focusing on the horse, I portray their spirits and soulsaEUR"their energy, movement and physical presence with drips and splashes of paint over texturized surfaces with simple line drawings.A Whether employing vivid hues, muted tones or black and white, the colors are random.A I pour, drip and spray paint, tilting the canvas to move the pigments and create runs. With the assistance of a palette knife, I scrape areas, move paint and create texture. A The painting develops with this process of addition and subtraction aEUR" blotting, scrubbing and sanding some areas, and layering more paint to other areas.A ...

Laurie Macmillan - Born in Greece, and having also lived in Israel and Nicaragua as a young child, I never felt as if I belonged in the Illinois of my childhood. I was irresistibly drawn to the West, where spaces were large and choices were expansive. To me, that landscape was exotic, and the geology was fascinating. I was also driven to explore the world. In 1973 I visited several third world nations and saw horribly overcrowded slums, realizing then that overpopulation was the world's worst problem. Travel was my focus for thirty years, along with hiking in the jagged, dramatic mountains of California's eastern Sierra. Now, painting has become my new travel, and an even more rewarding path to discovery. Although largely self-taught, I attended a weekly abstract painting workshop for several years, and have participated in numerous other workshops. Probably the artistic movement that has influenced me the most is abstract expressionism, and I love its depictions of pure energy. Tonalist paintings have always appealed to me; realism does not. I'm most interested in the play between color, texture and shape, and I paint with both ends of the brush, a palette knife, combs, sponges, seed pods ...

Linda Paul - Artists Statement" When asked 'What is your favorite painting', I always say, 'the next one I am going to paint!" Style: I don't paint in any one style, I let inspiration speak to me and I go with the flow. My work runs the gamut from chunky realism to abstract and impressionist painting. I use many different mediums to create my artworks. One of my favorites is egg tempera which I make by crushing stones and minerals and adding egg yolk. Blues come from crushed lapis lazuli, greens from malachite and natural green earth found around Verona Italy. I even use minerals found during hikes in the Rocky Mountains. I am captivated not only by the purity and naturalness of this medium, but by the science of it. Each pigment has its own set of properties and capabilities that must be explored. How better to express visions of the earth than with earth itself. This medium is luminous and lasts for centuries. also make my own acrylic paint in the same manner. By adding pure pigment to a acrylic polymer. I can add thing like crushed mica and pearlescents to make the painting come alive. Lately I have also ...

Elizabeth Barber Leventhal - My work speaks to the emotional attachment I have to the ocean. I grew up in coastal Massachusetts. The ocean was my playground, my summer and is my biggest inspiration. The changing of season's affect the ocean are my strongest memories. Within it I find organic shapes, perfect in their form, that captivate me. Just as each element in nature is designed for a purpose resulting in beauty, I strive to conduct the materials to come together creating a replica of the perfect beauty I find in God's creation all around me. My thought process is the result of endless experimenting trying to keep the beginning idea fresh. I reveal what I enjoy about the process of painting. In the end I allow the gems I find to speak clearly. Layers of materials are built up to create depth and movement. Each layer is a catalyst to the next phase of the process. The painting begins with a wash of color. Color is applied with brush or by pouring and dripping. Water is then added to the canvas either thrown or poured in areas. The water allows the color to move, mix and interact in ways I cannot ...

Seidai Tamura - I dedicate my life to realism, a realistic rendition in oil. YouTube Process Videos youtu.bev-1nD5lLcQw youtu.beSHkt6sSRqos youtu.bevi1ajAYaVcI ...

Maria Teresa Fernandes - Admiring Teresa's paintings we are touched by her pictorial sensitivity. Difficult task in light colors (volume and transparencies on a clear basis). Few do it due to the required dedication with pallete knife(no brush). It's painting consacrated by the love to paint. Radha Abramo(Renowned art critique)comments at Solo Exhibition Catalog at SESC Paulista in June 84 -( sent at request and reproduced in one of the pages of this site). ...

Zlatko Trako - In my early works, those I produced as a fine arts academy student, one can recognize a strong influence of classical masters, resulting in the motives being mainly figural in nature. In time, figure gradually starts to fade, texture is lost, form distorted, intensity of color increased. Every clear contour is lost and color, smear, smudge become dominant. The attitude toward the real world which existed before is no longer present, the painting is an experience in itself. In the process of my artistic maturing, I increasingly find my artistic expression in abstract compositions. Even though compositions, just like in the previous realistic works, cover the whole surface of canvas and even exceed its edges in an identical way, they represent something entirely new. What is characteristic for the last cycle of paintings is that they can continue beyond canvas boundaries. Colors try to diffuse, permeate beyond the painting. This very fact reflects a deep, immensely important spiritual dimension and man's eternal aspiration for penetration into the unconstrained. The layered way in which color has been administered enables us to follow the whole process of formation of a painting and thereby, in a way, participate over and over again ...

Mert Ulcay - Mert Ulcay was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1974. After studying to obtain a Bachelor of Economics in Istanbul, he moved to Italy and successfully completed a Masters Degree in International Economics and Management in Milan. He started his painting studies in 1996 with Mehmet Guleryuz (one of Turkey's leading contemporary painters) at his Bilsak Atelier in Istanbul. He moved Sevinc Altan in 2000, who was a former assistant to Mehmet Guleryuz, opening two exhibitions with her atelier. His works were chosen by the Cagdas Sanat Committee in 2001, for an exhibition with other "up and coming artists" at the Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul. In 2003, he participated in the "International Art Action for Peace" exhibition, with several leading painters in Turkey and moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where he now lives and works, painting from his own atelier. Mert Ulcay's paintings can be described as being emotional, somewhat introvert and very figurative. Always being interested in different expressions of people and of hidden feelings shown from behind "the mask". MERT ULCAY- www.mertulcay.com ...

Edelweiss Calcagno - www.edelweisscalcagno.com +1-240-701-9100 Using different techniques, some of them mixed together to create new unique techniques. My art is formed by adding layer after layer, producing extraordinary illusions making the mind get involved in the labyrinth of colors and materials. Viewers never stop discovering new things - there is something fresh each time they look at my pieces. My source of inspiration is that a picture can speak a thousand words. I have seen many times how my art can touch people. I believe in the freedom of rights and equality for all, and these beliefs impact my artwork and my message. My art does not judge, but it is honest, even when this means stating what I see there is a strong message. I trust my art because the word that comes out from it is a positive word. I discovered the beauty of creating sculptures and prints in addition to doing paintings, etching and restoring art and now they have become part of who I am. There are the infinite possibilities hidden in sculpture. Between mixed media, aluminum casting, and more I love to touch any type of material and find new ways to use ...

Edelweiss Calcagno - Leyla Murr - I am an artist whose desire to express has been incubating for a number of years. I feel I have an endless well of images inside me and each journey consists of spontaneous steps leading to a new adventure. This is how I view my life and my art. Colours and feelings cement the process. It is up to the viewer to find me. ...

Boyko Asparuhov - An imaginative expressionist,Boyko,s oil paintings are a treat to the eye and the soul with their strong brilliant colors, fantasy characters and symbolic elements fused into a bold, graphic style."My work conveys the positive energy of the universe-love,romance,dreams,music,nature,beauty and freedom,"says Boyko. Born in Pleven,Bulgaria in1959,Boyko began painting at age six. After graduating from the Bulgarian Academy Of Fine Art,he muved to Prague in the Czech Republic where he operated his own gallery until 2005 year.
