  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Luise Andersen - Luise'Mignon' Andersen Luise'Mignon' Andersen has only recently begun to reveal her lifes work. Soon after her debut she exploded onto the mainstream art world. Her breathtaking pieces have captured international interest. The stories Luise'Mignon' is telling through her truly deep, layered works seem to decipher the past and foretell the future, perhaps sharing her window to other dimensions and a seventh sense. Her detailed acrylic'Mignon' series speaks to the beholder. They inspire raw emotion and ignite ones imagination. The indescribable nature of the "Duree De Ma Vie" in particular has a growing portion of the art community considering it the conception of an entirely new style. Tom Irizarry Studio - Oil painter with broad knowledge of historic methods and historic colors. My studio is my laboratory. I make all my paint. My work focuses on elements of the earth air and land. What I observe is beyond a pretty sky or nice landscape. It is the notion that our earth and the universe, are imbued with a specific energy. Historically, this energy was described by the Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins as Instress and Inscape, derived from ideas of the medieval philosopher, Duns Scotus. Scotus argued that there is some matter entirely devoid of form. Paintings can vary from 9 x 12 inches to 6 x 8 feet. Viewers describe a profound feeling from the paintings, regardless of the size. Specialties Historic processes for paint making, mediums, grounds, oils, mineral pigments, oil mediums, tempera mediums, non-silver processes cyanotypes and archival digital pigment prints....

Philip Hallawell - I work in various media: oil, watercolor, dry pastels, pen and ink and mixed media. My work is a result of a fragmented view of the world, which gives it a surreal quality. However, my process is not surreal, because I start with a definite theme that I wish to investigate. My main area of interest is people and the human form and I am constantly investigating the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of Man. Over the years I have developed various series, which I revisit periodocally, investigating different aspects. In purely visual terms, what fascinates me is light and form and how I can use diverse visual elements in a complementary way, opposing, for instance, line and form, or rough and smooth textures. The use of diferent materials to achieve diverse expressions, either alone or as mixed media, along with alternating between a graphic representation and a painterly one, or mixing the two, is a very important aspect of the way I materialize my thinking into images. Equally important is the transition from very realistic images to a totally abstract means of expression and alternating between control and expressiveness....

Jack Reilly - As humans, we generally tend to perceive time in a linear manner. However, many of our common devices used to measure time are formatted in circular configurations. These range from ancient sun dials to analog clocks and modern timepieces. In what we perceive as our physical universe, spherical planets rotate while moving in primarily circular orbits around larger spherical objects as they all hurl through the infinity of space. From Stonehenge to medieval calendars to analog wristwatches, humans have attempted to employ circular motifs to harness or understand the passage of time in relationship to space and the physical world in which we exist. This preoccupation with mysteries of the universe, its vast open spaces, punctuated with uncountable heavenly bodies, have puzzled humans from primitive stargazers in ancient worlds to the most educated of scientists of our time. My interest lies in the investigation, through the medium of abstract painting, of our perception and translation of these elements, both tangible and intangible. This abstract work also acknowledges and comments on significant art historical movements of 20th century painting. My choice to begin on a circular structure creates a visual container that refers to the essence of repetition and endless nature ...

Presecan Claudiu - Path Over The Water aEURoeFrom Behind the VeilaEUR In Claudiu PresecanaEURtms recent series of paintings and drawings, Path over The Water, his investigation into how gesture is translated into visual imagery continues. Using a variety of methods of applying pigmentsaEUR"pouring, dripping, smearing, dropping, erasingaEUR"this series walks an edge between figuration and abstraction. Inspired by the vast Danube Delta which transverses his native Romania with its lagoons, reeds, hidden recesses, and isolated villages this art speaks to movement, change and, in a poetic way, to continuity. This work does not, however, portray a specific landscape; rather it speaks to an experience that transcends place and time. During the communist regime in Romania, which ended in 1989, reeds from the delta were extensively, and determinately, harvested with the goal of transforming the delta into a large agro-industrial zone. The reed, in PresecanaEURtms previous series, Traces of Water, is a symbol of the individual, freedom, and resistance, essentially a life force that perseveres. In his current work, the imagery of the reed becomes more and more abstracted leaving in its wake a trace, a quivering, of its being. Movement replaces figuration and form occupies space much as dancers ...

Sonja Kobrehel - My work in visual arts reflects the constant changes and experiences in my personal life. I am guided by my feelings, thoughts, dreams and visions. The sources of my inspiration are many: an appreciation for personalities and the human scale: in particular, I love to look for traces of people who came before and clues about what they did there and why. Journeys are an integral part of my artistic inspiration. The Mediterranean and Adriatic atmosphere that pervades my work comes from the summers I spent on the French and Adriatic coasts.I am always intrigued by the human cultural elements and visual stimulation that I encounter.I find that every place and culture reveals its beauty to me though everyday life. I like to use symbols in my art work and while creating my personal iconography. The symbols are clues to many aspects of my life, but my paintings usually start with a color idea, then evolve into compositions in which color is the primary subject. I work in collage, various media on paper and canvas, mixing everything possible together in a visual format for public display.Much attention is given to the surface texture by adding different materials, ...

Mary Zeman - in 1997, I began to paint after I had brain surgery to remove a benign brain tumor from the right side of my brain. I was recovering from surgery, and out of the blue, I called my mom and asked her to take me to buy some paint and brushes. This was the first time I ever painted in my life. While I was growing up, I was never exposed to art and just didnt know anything about it, though I had always wanted to learn more. I began painting on wood, paper, newspaper, anything I could find, then I started to paint on canvas. When I went back to my job in television, people looked at my art on the walls of my cubicle, and some people encouraged me to go further with it. I would work all day, then come home and paint at night, and looked forward to the time I would be painting. In October of 2000, I decided to leave my job and make a go of being a full-time artist. Everyday, I learn something new about art, and I love making art. The biggest compliment I can get is when adults look at ...

Malcolm Tuffnell - Malcolm Tuffnell Is a tremendous talent in contemporary figurative painting. His works exist between a realistic drawn representation of the female figure and an abstract use of impasto and color. He has been exploring the possibilities of oil paint and pastel for over 30 years, with particular attention paid to how color layers interact with eachother; specifically how thin overglazes of a strong color, for example phthalo blue or rose red, can change the character of the paint or pastel underneath them in unexpected ways, producing many new colors while neutralizing others into grays. He has chosen the female form as the subject of his paintings for its beauty, sensuality and historical precedent. He uses the fluidity of oil to express the sensuality of nude skin. Many of his works derive inspiration from the frequent opera and ballet performances he attends, such as Madame Butterfly and The Nutcracker ballet. However, he does not intend to illustrate a story explicitly but instead to suggest a more vague emotional narrative. Education/Accomplishments From 1977-1979 Mr. Tuffnell attended the University of California, Santa Barbara and studied with noted teacher Gary Brown; when there he traveled to Europe, where he was inspired to ...

Robert Pelles - As an award-winning practitioner of Hungarian commercial graphic art (a career he forsake after 20 years of owning his own successful design firm in order to commit himself solely to painting), Pelles understands and delights in using the idiom of abstract forms. His paintings tell stories about people. Even his houses-- memory scraps on Robert's' never-land landscapes -- come to vividly throbbing life in the absence of figurative forms. The conceptual quality of Pelles' art, his superior drawing skills, concordant use of color and structural harmony have made him one of the most sought-after Central European artists today. ...

Ridha Ridha - Abstract painting, which reflects my feelings and thoughts. My painting is for me a medium to express my views and impressions. I do it to feel free and to communicate with the whole people around the world. My art is an important mission for peace, love , freedom and democracy. In addition, it's a protest against oppression, tyranny, war, violence and Terror. ...

Andrea Benetti - Manifesto of Neo Cave Art was presented by Andrea Benetti at the 53rd Venice Biennale in the Natura e sogni aEURoeNature and DreamsaEUR pavilion in the Ca Foscari University, San Giobbe, Cannaregio, Venice, Italy MANIFESTO DELLARTE NEORUPESTRE Manifesto of Neo Cave Painting by Andrea Benetti Since the dawn of humanity, well before the invention of written language, Man felt the need to communicate, to leave some trace of his passage through this world. This he accomplished through painting. Early Man had to deal with the sun, the earth, the waters and the sky every dayaEUR| had to find a way to find his place in the balance of Nature. And even when Nature was unthreatening, he was in awe of Her, treating Her with the respect due a Deity, in full awareness of his own human limitations. Contemporary Man has denied those limits and trampled that respect, placing himself at the center of the universe and giving his own selfish needs absolute priority. In doing so, he has stupidly destroyed the enchantment and desecrated the sanctity of Life and Nature. So letaEURtms take a step backward. LetaEURtms start over, with the proper respect for Nature and for human ...

Claire Petit - In my work, beings of dream and intimacy migrate slowly to the merry-go-round of birth, death, and rebrith. Different periods and series rub shoulders in my decades of paintings. Duality breathes deeply, and from one life to the next, powerful feminine energy dominates moving, introspective, multiple, often wrapped in a gentle violence. Since 1989, I have been traveling and working between France and the United States. I had my first solo show in 1999 at the 24 Gallery in New York City. In 2004 my work was represented and exhibited at the Grant Gallery. In 2005 I left for Mexico, where I maintained a studio for three months in Oaxaca. From 2005 to 2010, my work was represented and exhibited by the Opera Gallery in New York City. During those years I regularly painted in New York. Since 2010 my work has been exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg Metz. My studio is in Nancy, where I live. Jerry Ross - Manifesto of American Verismo By Jerry Ross, 2012 "American verismo", a movement that I have recently founded, is a catch-all phrase for an artistic style that draws its main inspiration from Italian art, both classical and modern. There is an implied nostalgia for work done "dal vero" (after life) whether classical (Raphael, Rubens, or Caravaggio, etc.) or 19th century (the Tuscan I Macchiaioli school) or more contemporary. Verismo is somewhat akin to contemporary "atelier realism" but the latter has been criticized for an academic uniformity and its over attention to details. American verismo is more poetic and linked to post-impressionism, the Milan-based Scapigliatura ('wild hair') movement, and the I Machiaioli's commitment to social issues. But like atelier realism, American verismo is associated with a painterly sketching style, use of broad brushstrokes, and the alla prima, "direct attack" technique of painting. It is also linked to all'aperto (open air) impressionist-style landscape painting. In short, to pleinairism which has become widely popular in recent years. I first introduced the term during several classes he taught at the Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene and then later at the "Angels Fight Road Art Center" plein air retreat...
