  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Marty Kalb - Artists important to me Rembrandt,Cezanne and Matisse, because their work got better with age. Klee, because he makes me realize that simple ideas are the most complex and the most rewarding. Kandinsky, because his work was the first to teach me about the levels of meaning in abstraction. Twachtman, because his landscapes are about how to feel about place and process. Church, because his majestic vision is his own creation. Monet, because I see his hand and eye take risks. Hofmann because he controls the mind and frees the spirit. Heartfield and Goya because they do not look away. There are others, but as Hillel said "the rest is commentary" Subjects I return to. Color filled landscape abstractions. Realistic images of local streams, And waterfalls in other places. The Holocaust as the ultimate moral challenge Each is important My paintings explore realistically and abstractly an interest in landscape from my immediate surroundings, distant places of particular natural beauty, seascapes and undersea forms inspired by many visits to the Caribbean and a long standing interest in Asian art. Most of the paintings of realistic waterfalls are of places in Vermont, New York State and Ohio. The abstract waterfalls are inventions, ...

Robert Nizamov - Born and trained in Russia, Robert Nizamov explores a variety of approaches to painting, from representational still lifes to more abstract landscapes that in many ways recall Impressionism and its analogous movements. Above all, Nizamov strives for the painterly painting, a re-dedication to the medium of paint and brushstroke, based neither on the current market nor modern trends, but born from the sacred act of putting brush to canvas. What results is an approach to painting that is as versatile and varied as the subjects Nizamov chooses to portray. Colors work to create mood: alternately muted and subdued, calm and relaxed, bright and vibrant. Likewise, composition is skillfully employed to set the tone for each painting, at times balanced and serene, other times creating a sense of disparity and tension. Perhaps the hallmark of Nizamov's work, however, is the movement conveyed in each individual brushstroke, masterfully created in the specific way he applies the paint, infusing his images with light and adding a depth and richness to his work.

C.c. Opiela - The art of C.C Opiela is bold, dramatic, sensual and cabalistic. This is an artist leaping beyond the conventions of a known reality and beckoning the viewer to follow her to enter the landscaped of infinity. With an open ended vision she peers into reality and beyond which is seen. Her paintings are the records her mystical journeys of bright colors, light, and textures. The dance into the mysteries of life and the glimpses in the secret delight is served deliciously by her unique, creative and expansive vision. Working with experimental, mixed water-media on paper and canvas, the canvas, the artist creates her expressions of an abstract world. ...

David Fedeli - "I believe that as an artist, it is not my purpose to dictate what the viewer sees on the canvas, but rather to pose a question that causes them to seek an answer within themselves. Each individual brings their own life experiences into the decision, and for each of them the meaning is truly unique. My passion lies in reaching that inner self, and drawing it into, and out of, my art. My goal is to create a moment that touches their soul."...

Miguel Cerejido - Artist's Statement The nexus between music and painting and ways of pictorially representing sound and silence, have been the main subjects of my work as an artist since 1980. This exploration has many facets from attempts at a pictorial representation of sound, to the creation of environments (maybe places or landscapes) that result from the sensations, feelings, states of mind and/or visions generated by music. My work has gone through different stages from attempts to illustration of specific musical work to explorations of aspects of the musical structure itself. This is, of course, purely subjective The final phase of production in my work is distinguished by a return to painting, almost forgotten in my eagerness in use it as a medium instead of a purpose, and the utilization of all I've learned through the years about shaping a pictorial - not musical - art work, which held all the spiritual power of music, as an autonomous entity, without moving it away from it's musical sources by means of referent codes, which, I hope, made possible the identification of the theme by the viewer. The resolution of this process continues to evolve as I grow as an artist and ...

Joel P Heinz Sr. - Joel P Heinz Sr. was born in Hastings, Minnesota; raised and educated in Northern California: served in the Army in Viet Nam, and raised a family in California. He worked in various sales positions until he found his calling working with mentally disabled adults. He is now retired and living his dream in Maui with his wife, Kathy. In 1995, Joel began painting using acrylic paint on canvas with no formal art training. His artwork evolved from associating with other artists and the joy of experimenting and discovery. In the beginning, his favorite subject was Tropical Marine, colorful tropical landscapes and underwater scenes. As part of the evolution of his art, he dabbled in Egyptian art for a short time in order to practice working in detail, a noticeable characteristic of most of his artwork on canvas. For years he had appreciated artwork from a distance only to be disappointed in the lack of detail when viewed close up. He wanted his work on canvas to be detailed enough to be clearly seen whether viewed up close or from a distance. In the 21 years prior to moving to Maui, Joel's twice-annual visits to Maui cultivated an appreciation ...

Kees Van Eyck - My works of art express a metarealistic perception of our world, traditional in the history of Dutch painting. However, the source of my inspiration can also be found in European surrealism as well in American hyper-, and photo realism. In my collection Portraits of Icons of the post-war period of the 20th century I introduced the iconography of our era. These images of celebrities characterise movie-stars, media personalities plus inspirational individuals from the field of music, art, politics and philosophy. With these portraits I pay tribute to famous people with extraordinary gifts and talents, who influenced the development of mankind and left their mark on various fields during the 20th century. My perception of life on Earth is often depicted in a surrealistic manner. My attitude towards our environment is charged with criticism as well as hope for a better future. My paintings aspire to evoke the sense of beauty and to raise awareness of burning issues in todays world....

Sotiris Sotiriou - Sotiris Sotiriou depicts everyday life through the reformation of images originating from the supraliminal and subliminal stimuli present in his mundane life. He consciously selects images in time and space,no matter how essential or unimportant, real or virtual, original or common they are and he transfers them into his paintings, subconsciously mixing them with his memories and dreams in order to create the sense of the grotesque and the unknown. Through the rendition of those new unfamiliar images, he awakes his own senses which have been obscured by routine and he emphasizes the concepts of daily life ideas. His art moves between pop-art and neo-expressionism. He is interested in simplicity, the purity of colors and the pleasant feeling of form-and-color balance. Sotiriou likes comparisons: He is concerned about what is empty and what is full. A balance between the two is important to him. Sotiris Sotiriou was born in Nicosia, Cyprus. He studied Painting in the School of Fine Arts at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece under the supervision of Yiannis Fokas. He has also attented Etching and Photography classes. Most of his works regard the use of acrylic and oil on canvas, but...

Luis Guillermo Ramírez Ezquerra - Luis RE. Artist statment. Versus: sobre Borderline borderline [boer-der-lain] s. Limite, orilla, frontera.- a. Incierto, dudoso.

Lynn Rupe - "EXPECT DELAYS" URBAN HABITAT Some background on these paintings... The gorillas, lions, rhinos, narwhals, warthogs that inhabit these paintings are passing through the "urban jungle". They show up as very unusual pedestrians on very busy streets or perhaps they are stranded on a bit of grass or water in an otherwise completely hardened, urban situation. Sure, there are animals that can thrive in cities with humans - the pigeons, the rats, the dogs and the cats. And of course there is the stray moose or two that wanders down Main Street. Most wild animals, though, have crawled far away from humans to find some peace and refuge in remnants of forests and swamps. It is absurd to believe that these minuscule islands of habitat are adequate homes for wild animals. On these canvases I depict my fantasies of animals appearing in cities. Cities will be what is left for them so they had just better adapt! ...and there they are--calmly crossing the downtown streets. So I guess we had better expect a few traffic jams and a few delays! Ha! Note: The rhinos, elephants and gorillas that frequent my paintings can be easily identified but I'm not sure most...
