  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Leon K. L. Chew - I endeavor to present a unique and innovative style of Chinese painting, in combining ideas of calligraphy and painting, in integrating Science and Art, and in blending the East and the West. Using a traditional painting medium, but with self-invented modern technique of pigmentizing-and-alumizing, a binary balance between traditional art practice and contemporary art process is achieved. Another trademark of my paintings is the controlled and yet harmonious splashings of varied Chinese ink and colors, and a rich mix of dry-wet, dispersed-concentrated, bright-dark and light-heavy effects. Heavy color is created from a mixture of color pigments from mineral and vegetable sources. The surface of my paintings is usually converted into a virtual platform, sometimes unpredictable, on which diverse entities converge, and then diverge to make a picture. I continue to pursue a state between figurative naturalism and abstract intellectualism, between likeness and unlikeness; seeking the Yin Yang harmony of form and spirit, past and present. Dr Leon K. L. Chew...

Ivan Trollip - After completing High School I was called up to do my compulsary military training for 2 years. When this was done I found employment as a visual merchandiser for a couple of years at a chain of depatmental stores.I then went freelance and specialised in ladies fashion and this lasted another few years.I then got involved with garden landscaping that resulted in my own landscape bussiness for the next few years until 1988 when I attended an art coarse with a leading Artist in South Afica at the time. This was life changing for me.From my earliest recolections I have always been drawing and painting and I knew this is what I am supposed to do.IN 1999 I closed my landscaping bussinss and I have been painting ever scince.I tend to paint in series and prefer to spend a lot of time with each painting I create.I try as best I can to be in my Studio every day from Monday trough to Friday for an average of about 5-8 hours.Somehow there is alays something that needs doing. For me the most important thing is getting started once you begin working the ...

Edward Tabachnik - Edward Tabachnik Through all my works you will find that my attitude toward color and light combines tradition of impressionism with various surrealistic situations. Working on illustrations for Kafka's novels, I was looking for a symbolic image of a mystical town. I found it in Gaudi's "Sagrada Familia". Almost on each of my paintings you can see my "signature"- flying phantasmagoria tower, which has become for me a living entity, procreating itself, connecting The Past with The Future. Fascinated with the theory of Black Holes and the origin of The World is also reflected in many paintings in the form of "Singularity", through which Time passes, connecting The Past with The Future. I was always attracted to mystery of Kabbalah, and to other Jewish teachings. Many of my works are related to these themes. After seeing the destroyed Synagogue in Berlin, I've "recreated" it in my painting, and also dedicated a number of my works to Jewish History. In my works I try to blend my fantasy with sometimes well known, sometimes created architectural details. My schooling was both - in architecture and painting. My love for architecture can be seen through many of my works. There is ...

Kees Van Eyck - My works of art express a metarealistic perception of our world, traditional in the history of Dutch painting. However, the source of my inspiration can also be found in European surrealism as well in American hyper-, and photo realism. In my collection Portraits of Icons of the post-war period of the 20th century I introduced the iconography of our era. These images of celebrities characterise movie-stars, media personalities plus inspirational individuals from the field of music, art, politics and philosophy. With these portraits I pay tribute to famous people with extraordinary gifts and talents, who influenced the development of mankind and left their mark on various fields during the 20th century. My perception of life on Earth is often depicted in a surrealistic manner. My attitude towards our environment is charged with criticism as well as hope for a better future. My paintings aspire to evoke the sense of beauty and to raise awareness of burning issues in todays world....

Kees Van Eyck - Anna Kutishcheva - I build a frame, stretch and prime the canvas, forget my years of formal training and just sing and fly into elusive word of light, color rainbow and feelings. I work quickly and emotionally; usually finding right place, light, and state takes much longer than painting itself. It's impossible to say many things; they seem banal and meaningless put in words. I feel that the ancient way - through nature: shapes of trees and rocks, shadows and lights - gives an excellent opportunity to express your soul. One day and place it's cheerful, another - miserable and angry, but is always glorious. Painting is an exquisite joy for me, and I hope to share these feelings with my audience. ...

Anna Kutishcheva - Anna Kutishcheva - Hong Lu - From western modern art, Cubism and Surrealism are two fundamental conceptual influences on me. However, the overall construction of my work is still rooted in traditional Chinese painting, both in terms of composition and technique. I try to focus on the lyric element in an image, a symbolist approach: to suggest, not to define. Since I was a child, the unconsciousness and subconsciousness have always intrigued me. It seems to me they compose expression in art, as logic guides explanation in science. I have spent considerable time on psychology, anthropology and religious studies. I borrow thematic elements from various ethnic cultures and religions to support my creativity. I am looking for humanness, as a whole, rather than individual specifics, to depict and express in my work. Sometimes I get lost in my own search for expression and can only probe my way through the process without knowing what and why. The only saving grace for me is that I am an artist, not a scientist: I am here to describe, not to explain. I hope my paintings work as a well of dreams that can communicate and inspire others to their own interpretation and expression. ...
