  • Artists Describing Their Art:

David Cuffari - I approach my work as a visual poem. Sometimes the meaning is simple and direct and other times it's more complex. I prefer to create work that is open-ended allowing the viewer their own interpretation of what I present. I am primarily a painter preferring to work in acrylics as it allows me to make rapid revisions which helps keep the work fresh and immediate. The over-arching theme of my artwork is the human condition. I see the fabric of life as woven in opposites. By employing dualities like order/chaos, rough/smooth textures, themes of life/death, controlled effects/happy accidents, rational/irrational imagery, I try to paint interesting pictures that allow the viewer to see the world a bit differently. I am also interested in the notion of time. I don't believe that time is linear but more like an echo. I try to avoid static imagery preferring to create a complex painting that unfolds as you look at it, with layers of imagery and meaning. I do this by preserving the process of editing and revision as I arrive at the final image. Most recently I've been proceeding without a pre-conceived ...

Timon Maxey - My goal in painting is to create images that are humourous and/or interesting or else beautiful and a pleasure to behold. I like to tell stories with my cartoon images. You can see more art on my website www.maxey.co.nz I think that there is high value in art that clearly communicates something useful to the viewer and that, if it is necessary to read an explanation of an artwork in order to understand it, then it has largely failed. I have always been very interested and involved in art. My parents are both artistic and musical, and this inspired me to paint and draw from a very early age. Even while at university studying geography, I spent much of my spare time drawing, and deriving supplementary income from artistic endeavours. I have a very wide range of experiences and knowledge to draw from, and want to incorporate these into my art to produce work that interests and excites both the audience and myself. My goals are to secure exhibitions in public Galleries, and to exhibit outside New Zealand. Late in 2008, I travel to the Grand Canyon to kayak the Colorado River and to take photographs ...

Chris Alcantara - My art has been a part my life, a gift from God and cherish dearly, a blessing that I always wanted to share to many. My style evolve in my mid to late twenties and has it been a manifestation of feelings and emotional expression thru colors, figures & shapes. I view colors as the primal elements that give playful expression to my emotion and feelings that hit you in that particular moment. Using shapes and figure is another way to convey the story behind every piece I made. Some may say my works are just a composition of color, but I see it as reflection in life....

Evelyn Astegno - I would like to introduce my artistic thought through the words of an Italian Art Critic "Astegno, a Magic Realism that Americans really like" by Giovanna Grossato article on Il Giornale di Vicenza , Sunday 4 July 2004 It does exist deep inside many of us another Ego, of eternal youth and purity; it represents all we could and always wished to be. This Ego we miss and contemplate with tormenting desire is the poetic core of a young artist from Vicenza who is now becoming successfull in the United States. It is in fact in a prestigious gallery of St Louis, the "Third Floor gallery on Washington", that are currently being exposed some works of Evelyn Astegno, together with other emerging artists such as Craig Downs, Julie Malone and Christopher Gustave. The group of paintings Evelyn Astegno chose to display in the collective Art Show are extremely representative of her style, soon well defined from the beginning and matured since she started her career. They belong to a disquieting Surrealism where characters, probable but not assimilable to any type completely rooted in reality, represent probably different aspects of the same subject: the artist herself. Her painting is a thought translated ...

Steve Kiene - My art expresses fundamental cosmological and spiritual concepts such as the balances in nature, regeneration and growth, and the interdependence of all things. I want to express how man & nature are interconnected. In today's modern culture, many have forgotten, that all things, living and inert, have a part in our relationship with life itself. The tree branch carvings illustrate how man is just a branch of the larger organic cosmos. Where Man and Nature become one....

Patrick Sean Kelley - Behind the Art There is nothing more intimidating than standing in front of a blank canvas and wondering what it will become. There is also nothing more exhilarating. As I begin to apply paint to canvas I find my work seems to be in continuous motion. Always changing. Always progressing. Much like the oil paints that actually embody my visions. I am influenced by many places, things, people and of course, many artists. My latest work is changing yet again. The palette has become softer more jewel toned and the subjects more somber. They speak to me as I paint each stroke awaiting life on the canvas. I am clearly influenced by some of the more modern masters like, Klimpt, Kandinsky, Mirot, Caldwell and as always, Picasso. The art is Inspired by the subject. By a woman's beauty as it is seen and felt both internally and externally. The images in my vision actually seem to mask their true identities as they glance out at the viewer exuding an air of aloofness and mystique. Each stroke is painstakingly smoothed and controlled to create subtle dimensions and color that create the mysterious creatures that appear to come to life on ...

Kelie Myers - "Over the last several years I have created a body of work that is both diverse and stylistic. Having come from classical training when approaching a new work I first think of color and composition. However, weather I'm creating an oil painting, fine art print or a mixed-media piece bringing the viewer into the work through emotional response is what inspires me most. Mostly, I paint and create because I love it. Simple as that may be, but so true. I first fell in love with art as a "process" and I believe in the benefits of creating for creation sake. The empowerment and wealth of skills gained through pursuing one own creative spirit is a therapy for the soul unmatched by any other. Through the visual experience and teaching it is my passion to pass on this philosophy."...

Simon Boyd - In his current work, Simon explores the concept of desire through the seemingly insatiable appetite for sensory pleasures and excess. This is symbolized by sweets and candy; where clever packaging and imaginative simulations of fruit make them enticing and alluring. Candy offers an irresistible, short-lived experience, where, once the sugar has dissolved, we are left wanting more. Simon seeks to encapsulate his sweet compositions within flower-like shapes, so that they seemingly sit in suspended animation on the canvas. Using acrylic, oil, aerosol paint and glitter, he aspires to create the illusion of a state that is both temporary and in constant flux. Sweets have associations with infancy and, in this sense, the paintings are retrospective and playful. They offer a refuge and an escape to childhood. On the other hand, they could also be seen as 'keyholes' of desire, tempting one to probe deeper, with the lure of pleasure and satisfaction. Perhaps, like the apple of original sin, once the invitation has been accepted, a more complex, less innocent reality will be revealed. Simon was born and raised in London. He studied Fine Art for four years at Middlesex University, focusing essentially on painting and video. Since graduating ...

Koroleva-Prisyazhnaya Anastasia - We are all creators of our own soul. The basic style of my creativity i consider a "romantic" style. In this style those works are made, which are devoted to The Man and The Woman, to their relations : Their Love, Their Passion, Their Pain, Their Hatred ("She broke ", "When Love Goes ", "A Flower of Love" ). However, it is interesting for me to work with texture graphics- the main value of which is the complex, worked in details decor of a picture.("Fish", "A Forest Woman", "The Charming Courtesan"). The great respect i give to a principle of stylization, the idea should work especially creatively its frameworks ("Karabas-Barabas", "Duremar"). I began to learn the Art of Graphics being trained in architecture (1995-1998) and since then from a subject taught within the frameworks of the program of studing, it has turned to a subject of my passion which i cultivated from hobby to a business of my Life. Nevertheless, except graphics, i`m a professional make-up artist, it is my second profession. Working as a make-up artist i like to invent and to create too. Ussually, creative photoshootings and art-sessions are the result of this. By photoshootings ...
