  • Artists Describing Their Art:

David Rycroft - "De ses tableaux, en partie inspires de la calligraphie zen, se degage en effet une grande impression de serenite." Midi Libre "The works in David Rycroft's'Peace and Inspiration' series are the product of a technical breakthrough, which has unlimited potential. Whether their imagery suggests landscape or organic forms, these'unpainted' pictures evoke a cosmic dimension, which is truly liberating." Richard Calvocoressi Director, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art ...

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...

Maria Teresa Fernandes - Admiring Teresa's paintings we are touched by her pictorial sensitivity. Difficult task in light colors (volume and transparencies on a clear basis). Few do it due to the required dedication with pallete knife(no brush). It's painting consacrated by the love to paint. Radha Abramo(Renowned art critique)comments at Solo Exhibition Catalog at SESC Paulista in June 84 -( sent at request and reproduced in one of the pages of this site). ...

Heather Patterson - Award winning artist and Rye resident Heather Patterson has been painting professionally for 16 years. Heather has exhibited her work in NYC and throughout Westchester, NY. She enjoys capturing the beauty of local (and not-so-local)landscapes and landmarks in oils on canvas. Heather also donates her time and talents to various local organizations in Westchester. In 2005, she created a garden mural in the lobby of Midland Elementary School, raising almost $40,000.00 dollars for the PTO's "Year of the Playground". ...

Tapan Kar - Born in 1954. Tapan Kar is an Indian artist who lives and works in Kolkata. He graduated from the Govt. College of Art and Crafts, Kolkata and pursuaded an MA in Bengali in the University of Calcutta. Tapan's favourite medium of work is Tempera, a less used medium of the present time. The matte finish of tempera gives his works a special dimension which reflects the true meaning of his thought.... and the life....

Rebecca Merry - Rebecca takes her inspiration from images of sacred art: primarily Islamic geometry, Christian Orthodox Icons, Indian and Western miniatures and illuminations, and early Italian Renaissance painting. More recently she has been drawing inspiration from Russian folk art, and Art Nouveau. She works primarily in egg tempera and is a member of the Society of Tempera Painters. Tempera is a traditional paint medium still used by the Orthodox Church which combines egg yolk and pigments to make a bright durable paint which is painted on gesso panels. She also makes her own gouache paint from pigments for her works on paper, as used in Indian miniature painting, and some collage work and etchings. The work itself is colourful, intense and with a strong narrative content. All of it depicts an archetypal, symbolic world where the ideals of things exist. To this end, all the pictures are based on geometric patterns that give them their innate harmonious quality. The colours too are carefully chosen, to give a sense of musical composition, an idea drawn from Indian miniature painting, where images are often painted as a mirror of a musical mode. ...

Colin Baxter - Colin's paintings do not try to compete with modern sophisticated images that aim to manipulate, they are meant to stimulate your imagination with a sense of mystery. His paintings encompass a wide range of subject matter and different approaches in both oil and water-colour. Their originality stems from combining many influences so that figurative work, landscapes and abstracts often overlap. Colin says of his work, "You need to dream and let things come from deep inside, then, over the years, you look for links. My paintings do not try to compete with modern sophisticated images that aim to manipulate, they are meant to stimulate your imagination with a sense of mystery." His artistic vision is continually evolving, influenced by art he has seen and studied, and inspired by a sense of life's wonder and mystery. The one constant in his work is respect for the painting process itself and the mysterious journey of life and painting. A quotation that Colin once read from an old American Indian, "To see the world you must look twice, once at the detail in front of you, then again at the very edge of visibility where dim visions pass in the ...

Yu Wu - I create oil and acrylic paintings that use vibrant colors through a subtle employment of tinting strengths over undertones. The medium is applied in a painterly fashion with brushes and palette knife on canvas. The series I am submitting focuses on canalscapes from Venice where light plays on the architecture in a style akin to the Impressionists. The artwork brings the serene ambience of the quiet canals of Venice to the walls of the American home. The splash of illustration that extends beyond the straight edge of the painting intends to envelop the viewer and draw him into the environment. Once in, the viewer moves down the canal, wondering what lies around the corner. ...

Michael Griesgraber - In my recent "X Squared" Series I combine vibrant colors with the ideas espoused by the Color Field "school" artists whose paintings are characterized primarily by large fields of flat, solid color spread across the canvas creating areas of unbroken surface and a flat picture plane. The Color Field movement placed less emphasis on gesture, brushstrokes and action in favor of an overall consistency of form and process. In this respect the colors are freed from objective context and become the subject itself. I also find, generally speaking, musical notes and colors have a common attribute. Musical notes are as individual as colors. Both have a primitive charm that flows through the brain to inundate our emotions. Colors, like musical notes, stimulate certain moods. Combinations of colors like music can evoke joy, excitement, fear, anger - any number of emotions - while the used of geometry in my paintings provides balance and stability just as music uses structure to create melody and harmony. It should be obvious that the X Squared Series paintings are more akin to jazz than classical music in their construction and composition. As the Hans Hofmann wrote, "The world comes to us through the mystic realm of color. ...
