The cranes are so small and the hand just big enough that the viewers have to come very close to the painting in order to really see the cranes. Close enough, that they too, may frrl like they might just crawl up and nestle into the hand themselves.
Originally I had intended to paint one bird and to use my hand for the model, but the symbolism was wrong. I used Michael's hand instead and at the last minute decided to add "him"n the hand as well.
"The hand of God" people utter aloud when they first see this painting. Yes, and that of my husband's, I am in both of their hands.
