According to Greek mythology, Phaethon was the son of the sun god, Helios. In order to prove this, he asked Helios to allow him to drive the sun's chariot for one day. He soon lost control of the chariot and came too near the earth. In order to save the earth from destruction, Zeus struck Phaethon with a thunderbolt sending him tumbling to earth.
