upon my return to portugal i met my mentor the symbolist painter lima de freitas from whom i gained insights into other realms and possibilities of painting and with whom i was fortunate to philosophise. in the catalogue to my first one-man show in 1987 lima de freitas wrote:
certain disciples reveal from the very outset signs of a well defined internal configuration marked by obvious tendencies; tendencies and configuration that are, in the deepest sense of the word, a true vocation revealing a voice of its own and the insistence of a true calling. / we are given to see a universe of tranquil sadness with a resonance of the far-east (the flight of coloured birds, the filigree of branches and trees) where the presence of what is absent quietly throbs and the immaterial suddenly becomes visible. submersion and flight. submersion in the immovable flooding of oceans, tears and forgetfulness - a slow descent - not unlike that of a drowning man - into the blue depths of the maternal unconscious. flight as in aspiration; swans and flamingos in their upward glide, boats without helmsmen linked by a thread to the memory of an astral bearing...
