Artwork Description:
The basic composition of Beetonia is an essay on the beautiful designs in the Croton leaf and its sticky counterpart, the honeycomb. Since the Crotons do not flower, I had to invent aCroton Roseto attract thebee. By placing the bee at the focal of the flat leaf, I set up a buzzing sound with the filmofflapping wings, thepenetrating proboscis, the insect s grasping legs and a nervous, curled stinger.
Patterns in the central leaf are layers of glazed kidney outlines, over-painted with a network of hexagonal shapes. This light pattern contrasts with the heavy tapestry and linear exuberance ofthe background. One visitor found unintended cats hidden in the thick weaving.
