Artwork Description:
Roman Candles portrays an abstract, fantasized family of Tilandsia spikes interacting in fluid response to a light breeze in the host tree. The components of this specimen suggest a functional division of the spikes.
in the middle foreground a small shoot leans on a moving leaf that extends into the viewer s space. The viewer is drawn to a backdrop of more mature stalks--some of these have been transformed into tribal chieftains with special yellow headdresses, fashioned from branches and luxurious red robes, featuring pouches, scarves and other insignia of rank. More formal stalks, stationed between the chieftains, wear zippered blue uniforms with epaulets and bright floral combs. On the right side of the composition many spikes are bent low--awaiting more favorable environmental circumstances to stand upright. This inner-world of spritely creatures is concealed and protected by broad bands of roseate foliage, weaving in the foreground. Artist s book, Perfection of Form, 2010 included, ils. pp.46-48.
