Artwork Description:
A popular theme depicted by many artists, as far back as Giotto in 1302, tells the story told in Luke 1:39-45 of the visit of Mary with her cousin, Elizabeth.
After being told by the angel, Gabriel, of her pregnancy and the impending birth of Jesus, Mary is also informed that Elizabeth, who is well advanced in age, will also bear a child. Mary, we are told, hurries to the town in the hill country of Judea where Elizabeth lives. We can only speculate how long and difficult her journey was and her emotional state. Perhaps seeking out this other woman who shared such unusual circumstances must have been foremost in her mind as a source of support and comfort. The traditional images in much of the art about this biblical story shows the physical greeting of the older and the younger woman, illustrating the strength of the bond which only they share.
