« Behold the man» John 19:5 This unique painting depicts a parallel between the moment Christ was condemned to be crucified and our present social and political situation to show how in general we keep failing to protect Love in our world, how greed and fear still rule humanity, how it still « does not know what it is doing ». In the heart of the painting is Jesus Christ, the Light and Love of the world led to be crucified. An angel above holds a scroll that reads: « they know not what they do» in reference to Christ’s Words Luke 23:34 meaning « we still know not what we do ». To the left is President Trump depicted as Pontius Pilate the moment he washed his hands. Next to him is German chancellor Merkel as Pilate’s wife Matthew 27:19. Pope Francis as Nicodemus regretting what is happening while UN secretary Guterres as Caiaphas scorns at him. French president Macron as an aide-de-camp assistant helping Pilate Trump wash his hands. British minister May as a lady-in-waiting. Russian president Poutine as a Centurion and Syrian president Al Assad as a legionary guard pushing a child servant aside, symbol of his brutality. In the background the anonymous ones who own the planet, those responsible who truly « move the pieces » in today’s world the « pieces » being the «leaders » depicted. To the left a building a bank... , to the right an old and fragile architecture a church... . Far in the distance is Golgotha. Many other symbols are present in the painting to reinforce the image of our present Status Quo and how we are going backwards in our values placing money and the power that goes with it above everything else. The painting was inspired by Bosch’s Christ carrying the Cross and a personal experience during a Catholic spiritual retreat. The painting alludes in part to the Ghouta chemical massacres of 2013.
