Artwork Description:

This painting won First Place Award for oil acrylic painting, Space Coast Art Festival, Nov. 2017. Phenomenology of a dining booth. To accommodate a photo, Mike moves left and his friend moves right to be side-by-side, at center of the booth, to show off their Tshirts, filling an otherwise empty place. Mike has a beer his friend an orange juice. Edward Hopper s Nighthawks watch in the background. Reflection of man at table next to them appears in mirror. He seems indifferent, but nonetheless is in the picture. Yellow candle burns on left, an empty, white water jug balances the space on the right. Glasses are half empty, indicating thirst quenched with the left hand. No chopsticks present with Asian food. Waiter takes photo of the event, capturing himself as well. His Tshirt has straight black lines, contrasting with designer tee shirts that show different aspects of having a hole in one s chest. Mike wears a smart watch while his smart phone turns into a glob of paint. Paint drips off the counter in the mirror but not touching anyone. Mike wears a furry snow cap, folds his arms, and shows half a smile while his friend holds onto his chin with his right hand and makes a fist on the table with the other hand. Scrapings of dried paint off the palette act as Mike s napkin. Non-phenomenological assumptions: there must be lots of gum stuck to the bottom of the table Mike and his friend are gay. The painting transcends the photograph by the presence of the artist painting himself in place of the waiter and by painting on canvas Mike and his friend who appear singularly and uniquely in the present rather than virtually and unalive in the past. It is a presentation of life they themselves cannot create. Recently installed by Brevard County Cultural Alliance art in public places program at the Lexus of Melbourne Showroom in Viera, FL, but rejected by the dealership as having inappropriate content. So much for LGBTQ rights.
