Second of two similar paintings. Entered the first painting into the Nude Nite Orlando show in 2013. I had priced it at 1800, just on a whim, since 18 was the age of the model and 1800 was wishful thinking. I’m not sure who purchased it, but the sale was a surprise to me.
This is a second painting of the same subject, though larger and with darker colors. Taken from a photo of himself by model Houston Whitehouse, who lived in Chiefland, FL. I never met Houston even though we had plans to do a photo shoot together.
The first version is more colorful, but both have a lifeless, ghostlike skin tone. Houston is gay and had complained to me in emails about how he was harassed in high school. His favorite subject was himself, and he took many provocative pictures and even did a few videos of himself wandering about the woods, which I thought were uniquely creative. The model’s pose is provocative, with the right hand signaling hush-hush silence while the left hand signals “I’m available”. It resembles Adam’s left hand in Michelangelo’s painting The Creation of Adam, and also Harold Stevenson’s gross painting of Sal Mineo titled The New Adam. I chose to include my left foot and leg painted in natural colors as a turn from the sexual preference and suggestiveness of the model. The foot is graceful and sensitive and points in the opposite direction from the “attractive” torso and buttocks of the model. It is a decision of choice but one influenced by physiognomy, Merleau-Ponty.
