Artwork Description:

An afternoon view from the top of the Flat Iron Building in Asheville of Mount Pisgah with a sun dog, or, parhelion of 22 degrees. According to William Corliss, in his book : Unusual Natural Phenomena, these bright patches occur at the same altitude as the sun, about 22 degrees to either or both sides. They often appear by themselves and arise when the axes of the ice crystals in large number are vertical. The particular ice crystals associated with this phenomenon are shaped like circular cafe tables, often with smaller, circular bases, and with a relatively thick faceted center support.
