This piece was created using large sheets of white Japanese Hosho paper (printmaking paper) which was cut into many sizes of circles and other shapes. Each cut piece was then individually colored using inks, dyes and paints. After drying, all the pieces were sewn together by hand using golden metallic thread, before being sewn onto a beautiful sheet of merlot-colored handmade paper to create this finished image.
"Belle Moderne" is meant to evoke the feeling of grapes on a vine, hanging in the sunlight. I was inspired by the beautiful vineyards of southern Oregon to create this piece - I hope it brings you the feeling of light and natural beauty, and invites you to pour yourself a glass of wine. Cheers!
