Artists Describing Their Art:

Mary Anne Mitchell - Mary Anne Mitchell is a fine art photographer who has worked as an artist and commercial photographer for over 20 years. Much of the recent photographic artwork reflects her desire to document images in a manner that connects the viewer to a moment that is often experienced by all, but very seldom stated in a photograph. Her current series of black-and-white, sepia-toned photographs is a collection of transient moments photographed via rearview mirror. The photographs aim to connect the viewer with the universal longing to capture fleeting instances in time. These were exhibited at Mason Murer Fine Art in Atlanta, Ga. in April and May of 2007. Mitchell's work is permanently on display at The Sanctuary Hotel in Kiawah, SC. This series suggests the human element through its absence in abandoned ruins, ornate fences, empty doorways, gardens, and deserted shorelines. These lush, often untamed, scenes of nature capture the mystical qualities so specific to the Carolina low country. These are also part of the Wells Gallery collection. ...

Nora Lux - I take photographs by a traditional 35mm Reflex camera and films. In my images I catch forever the emotion of a journey named existence. Almost all my visual projects concern the body, usually my own body. I use Photography as a tool to observe myself in my intimacy, to "read" among the abstract spaces of my soul.... Photography , in its natural dimension, is a synthesis of a moment tha is gone, not visible anymore. Photography is a memory, but also a piece of life to believe in, a valid instrument to reflect on , following emotional itineraries, giving a perspective to different points of view. In my pictures I visualize my feelings emerging from my intimacy. Taking pictures becomes an action to free myself , a moment of reflection, depicting what I feel in that proper moment, all those ghosts dancing with me : fear, illusion, melanchony but also tenderness, joy, love. Nora Lux ...

Daniel King - Daniel spent his childhood in the midwestern United States, received his BFA in Media Studies at the Columbus College of Art & Design, and served as an Air Force Officer at the airplane maintenance/storage center in Tucson, Arizona. He is still making up for time lost. In 2006 Daniel returned to personal/experimental film. He began interrogating his relationship with military power, personal authority and the public representation of each. "The images I seek are beneath the surface, and along the perimeter of the designed social landscape, off the beaten path but not out of the city's shadow. I place the burden of dreams, yours and mine, on the places we live and work. Artificial and haphazard landscapes often ignored by society, or hidden from its inhabitants interest me in a very fundamental way.' 'From 2003-2004 I photographed the series "Grounded" focusing on the dreamlike experience of working at the military-industrial storage facility in Southern Arizona often referred to as "the Boneyard." This facility contains the wreckage of out-modded 20Th century defense, and offense, technology splayed across 1200 acres of the desert southwest.' 'By combining antiquated photo-mechanical cameras with the use of digital printing, I ...

S Brian Berkun - Statement Brian personally prints each photograph using traditional black and white silver based processing on fiber paper, toning the prints in a selenium toning solution. Additional processing steps in the darkroom contribute to archival permanence. Some of his photos include handcoloring selected areas of the photograph which adds greater visual depth and interest to the image. Current works focus on historic subject matter found in the primitive and remote areas of Utah, and modern day "roadside attractions". Travels into remote areas of the desert Southwest have yielded images of ancient America. Traveling the backroads he has found a wealth of subject matter left over from the time before there was the national interstate highway program of the'60's. These images, combined with hand coloring, have provided a direction in his work reminiscent of picture postcards of the'50's. ...

Stuart Haden - I am searching for new subjects and innovative ways of expressing them. How the subjects look within the frame interests me. I want to make beautiful photographs which are balanced, simple, surprising and more meaningful than the collection of facts the camera describes. There are two main types of photography that exist. John Szarkowski, the past Curator of the Museum of Modern Art Photography Collection divided photography into Mirrors and Windows and wrote a book about it. Self expression exemplified by Mirrors and exploration exemplified by Windows are broadly how Szarkowski divides the practice of photograhy. I prefer the Window type of photography. This is the photography practiced by Eugene Atget, Walker Evans, Cartier- Bresson, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, Sebastiao Salgado, William Eggleston, Robert Adams, Jan Groover, Joel Meyerowitz and Stephen Shore. I am a Window or realist type photographer and I study these master photographers. The seven characteristics of my kind of photography are: 1. It deals with the real world. David Bailey said: "It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer. You need less imagination to be a painter because you can invent things. But in photography everything is so ordinary; ...

Stuart Wilson - I am an English digital artist and photographer having trained professionally at Salisbury College of Art in the 70's. I am totally passionate about Photography in all its forms and I seek inspiration from all things natural. I am fascinated by, and forever observing, the constantly changing relationship between mankind and nature. I am happy to share my enthusiasm and experience with anyone who might be interested. Photography for me remains something timeless, something priceless....

Ellie Brown - About My Sisters 1996-2006 I began photographing my sisters in 1993 during my first photography class in high school. It wasn't until I was a junior at Mass Art that I began to take it seriously as a project and see its larger potential. I began trying to compare my sister's very different lives to my own. We have different mothers; theirs being Jane my stepmother, but we share the same father I was fascinated by how I thought they were being socialized into Girls with a capital G. I loved when I could catch them staring in the mirror pretending to have breasts, playing with their toy ironing boards and dolls or playing dress-up in a princess dress. At the same time, I started photographing their friends. What I discovered defeated my notion that there was an easy definition to what a girl is. At this time Abby was seven and Emily was eight. Emily was adopted when I was 12 because my stepmother and father couldn't conceive. As soon as they adopted her, Jane became pregnant with Abby. They are nine months apart and where always in the same grade. I was absolutely...

Ellen Rosenberg - Ellen S Rosenberg spent her girlhood on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay, a small town called Salisbury Maryland. She later earned her degree in Art Advertising from the University of Maryland. A second degree followed from the Temple University School of Allied Health in Occupational Therapy. She has been juried into the National Association of Women Artists. Her work has been shown in over 50 juried international art shows, as well as invitational and solo exhibitions. She is also a free-lance photographer for Jazz Improv magazine. All of Ellen's work is printed in her studio on fiber-based archival paper. "I grew up during the time of Brownie cameras, black and white family portraits and memories of childhood preserved on by faded 3x 5 snapshots hidden away in a shoebox, only to be viewed during family holidays. As a teenager, I often hid away in my room, painting, drawing with charcoal, frequently copying the images from old family photographs. As I pursued dueled careers in motherhood and healthcare, I put down the paintbrush and channeled my passion for creativity into other more practical venues. Until I saw a documentary on Jackson Pollock. I was struck by...
