Artists Describing Their Art:

Corrie Mccluskey - My photography explores themes of "place" (as a repository of memory and symbol, and as a cultural artifact), the passage of time, looking at the forbidden and forgotten. I've searched out sites that touch the deeper emotions - places that are hard to look at, or where those in charge don't want us to see. This is a commitment to finding the "truth" (if there is such a thing) and a reminder of our choices as human beings. My method is to do a kind of street survey, focusing on buildings & industrial warehouses, prisons, train stations, cityscapes, graffiti and architectural details, using ambient light. I study how people have interacted with their environment and how the space can take on a life of its own, often with ghosts in every corner. Many of my images are of settings that people have left behind like empty skins. It seems the world is increasingly a very difficult place to live for so many - perhaps we've entered a new dark age - and I'm needing to focus my attention (and my camera) on social issues, starting right in my own back yard. I've begun a longterm project, "Within a Ten-...

Henning Von Berg - "Provocative photos for people who understand the fine difference between sex and sensuality!" (r) IN-Magazine, Hollywood: Noted photographer Henning von Berg is the guy whose photos of 6 nude men in the German parliament'Reichstag' made the front pages of 46 international newspapers. Famous for bizarre group shoots in unique locations, the former architect likes to combine all kinds of bodies & buildings. Henning von Berg is the last male descendent of a traditional German family (477 years old). He took his first nude photos at the tender age of 12, and today the 6'5" tall giant has earned world wide recognition as a trend setter and a fearless lensman. He is willing to break all the rules to achieve startling photos of women and men in great settings, public and private. To date, the work of'HvB' is known on all five continents. His material has been published in a variety of high-profile periodicals, on greeting cards, calendars and lithograph posters, as well as all kinds of art books. Von Berg lives and creates in Amsterdam, Hollywood and Berlin. His artistic motto (r) is: "Provocative photos for people who understand the fine difference between sex and sensuality!"(r)...

Henning Von Berg - Bob Bennett - All my work is done in a *very* simple, traditional darkroom - One enlarger, four trays, and a collection of hand tools made from things you can buy at any art supply, or hardware store. Though I work digitally (making web graphics), nothing in either the assignment or art portfolio has been made by a computer. I print only two or three'original' copies of an image, overwhelmingly on 16x20, in black and white. All color is by hand, a combination of watercolor, and Marshall oils. If you are an assignment client, that's your repro material. ( Everyone who has ever gotten it, has been'tickled pink'.) Art portfolio prints are made from 4x5 copy negatives of the'master/originals'. There are'second' master prints available, but not of every image. I've been doing this work since the early'80's, and I've written quite a few artists' statements about the art portfolio work. The more time goes by, the less aedequate words seem to be, and the less interested I am in trying to talk about the pictures at all. ( If words could'do it' ... I'd be a writer ... but you've noticed, I am not one....) ...

Ken Smith - The ongoing theme of my work is the recognition of natural forces, shapes, gestures. When I choose my subjects to work with I feel a sense of belonging to those innate forms I know them as my own destiny. It is satisfying for me to attempt to identify the most basic truths, that are common denominators of life's dynamic both in humans and in the rest of the natural world. My role as an artist is to say, "Look at this it is what I feel is true do you feel it also?" My creative life began as a freelance writer, and a commercial and editorial photographer. Since 1991, I've been concentrating on the fine art side of the work, and for the past eight years I've been working primarily in still life. Most of my work is split-toned black & white silver prints, although I sometimes handcolor the work. Recently my work has evolved towards color, and printing with archival pigment ink on fine papers. This change has imbued me with exciting new possibilities for creative expression and presentation. My work has been exhibited in international venues is in corporate and private collections in the United...

Steve Buchanan - My work has primarily dealt with details of common objects. Lately however I've been focusing more on wider views and showing idealistic and anti-idealistic views side by side. I respect the power of so called "pretty pictures" and the emotional affect they can have on people but at the same time I'm concerned that pretty pictures, especially nature photos, lull viewers into a sense that everything is good. Everything is not. I propose no solutions but work hard to inform about these problems. Information is the first step in correction. Watch this space for more....
